Teacher Tips!
K-3
While grocery shopping with your child you can practice phonemic awareness. As you put items in your grocery cart, say a rhyming word for each product. The rhymes do not have to be real words such as 'chips' & 'dips'. They can be nonsense words such as 'chips' & 'mips'. Invite your child to think of other rhymes.
K-5
Read books, poems, or tongue twisters that have “alliteration” (repeated consonant sounds) like “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.” This is a great way to emphasize the initial sound. Ask the Ellettsville librarian for books like this. If you call ahead, she will leave them at the front desk for you.
K-12
Post a family message center in your kitchen or family room. Write a message to your children. Occasionally, pin-up cartoons and short articles from magazines or the newspaper. Encourage your children to leave messages for other family members. This is a fun way to encourage writing.
