Sliding into summer
Looking to keep your child's learning on track this summer? WGSD offers a wide range of engaging and educational experiences. With programs for all students and skill levels, our summer learning opportunities are the perfect way to explore new interests, gain new skills, and have fun while learning.
How do I register? Registration for all summer programs begins tonight, March 1 at 7 p.m.

Jumpstart to Kindergarten
Children will have the opportunity to become familiar with the kindergarten experience through activities that promote the development of literacy, math, art and music abilities, as well as social and fine-motor skills. Classroom and school routines will also be addressed in order to help students make a smooth transition to kindergarten. Children must be five by August 1, 2023. This is a free program available to all WGSD residents.
Summer Exploration Experience
Summer Exploration Experience is a free program for students entering 1st through 5th grade during the 2023-24 school year.
Students will:
- enjoy 23 days of hands-on/project-based learning.
- have a voice in the direction of their learning.
- drive their own personalized final project, reflecting on their interest in a topic.
The program is taught by certified staff who are trained in project-based learning.
Dates: June 5 – July 7 (No school June 19 or July 4)
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Location: Avery Elementary
Celebrate Reading
Celebrate Reading is a tuition-free summer program offered to students by invite only.
Dates: June 5 – July 7 (No school June 19 or July 4)
Time: 12:30 p.m. -- 2:30 p.m.

Need after program care?
Summer Adventure Club is the Before and After School Care Program in conjunction with the Summer Exploration Experience (SEE). Adventure Club provides a safe space for children to dream, organize, interact, and actualize their interests, play with friends, and explore new ideas.
Summer Adventure Club is a fee-based program that provides services from 7 - 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. - 5:45 p.m. and is open to SEE students K-5, and incoming kindergarteners participating in JumpStart to Kindergarten.
Hixson Summer Academy
Hixson Middle School offers free summer school enrichment to district students entering 6th through 8th grade during the 2023-24 school year.
Dates: June 5 – July 7 (No school June 19 or July 4)
Times: 8:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.
Location: Hixson Middle School
High School
Students in high school can register for a variety of courses including personal finance, communication arts, physical education, math and experiential learning courses from the Chelsea Center.

Interested in online options?
We will once again offer virtual summer programming for students through Launch. Families with elementary and middle school aged children will have a variety of enrichment and summer academies to choose from. There will be two summer program sessions: June 5-30 and July 5-31.
Courses offered include coding, reading, math, virtual field trips, adaptive software, arts and physical activity and much more.
