Let’s look at extinct animals

By: Aadya Posam, 3rd grader

You might not believe it, but 99% of the world’s animals are extinct! Some animals haven’t been seen for so long, they’re called extinct unofficially. One example of an unofficial extinct animal is the Baiji. It’s a dolphin that only lives in the Yangtze RIver, China. It has not been seen for about 19 years. It’s the only dolphin driven extinct by humans. The Yangtze river became too polluted. Other animals are marked officially extinct. One of these is the Passenger Pigeon. Their habitat was cut down and later, their meat was used as cheap food for the poor, which resulted in them being hunted massively. They died out in the wild and the last known alive Passenger Pigeon was captive. They died in 1914. Big animals have gone extinct too! The woolly mammoth went extinct because of food and habitat loss. Lots of birds went extinct. The Great Auk has an unusual story. They were killed off. The last one died because during a large storm, three men thought The Great Auk was a witch and had conjured up the storm, so they killed it.
