The SoRoCo Weekly Newsletter
January 15, 2017
Dear Team,
Martin Luther King, Jr. was an agent of radical change in our country and arguably the most prominent figure of our civil rights movement during the 1960's. As we observe MLK Day this Monday, we should reflect on his statement about the goal of true education:
"Intelligence plus character."
In my humble opinion, I believe we at Soroco do a great job of building both of these attributes in our students. In terms of developing intelligence, our focus on the higher levels of understanding (creating, evaluating, and analyzing) teach our students to be able to think critically in a multitude of different life situations. Our amazing school culture and the norms we have set for behavior make it easy to continue to develop young men and women of exceptional character.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. challenges us as educators to teach our students to think critically, but also INTENSIVELY. What exactly does that mean to you?
With much gratitude,
~ The Admin Team
Our First Ski Day 2017
High School Student of the Week - Logan Walz
Logan was nominated this week by his assistant principal, Mr. Luongo, for scoring a 62 on the ASVAB, which has opened the door to him when he enrolls in the Army. With a score like that, he will be able to become a head mechanic, start working on jets and eventually helicoptors. He wants to get a 76 the next time he takes the ASVAB so he could work on the helicoptors right away. He has been motivated to get in shape for the military, running and doing push ups and sit ups and is up to 22 pull ups. He is letting his hair grow long while he still can.

Best Part about Soroco: It's more of a ranching community as compared to Steamboat, where I was an outcast. I can talk to kids here, and they actually understand what I'm saying.
Middle School Student of the Week - Austin Little
Austin was nominated this week by his Principal, Mr. Purnell. Austin is an extremely helpful young man when anybody at school needs something done. We can always count on him to be honest and tell the truth in any situation. Austin had a surge in his motivation last quarter to improve his grades in his classes. Now he is off to a great start to the third quarter, and hopes to grow as a leader here at Soroco.

A Message from the Athletic Director
The wrestling team traveled to Rangely and we had some individual wrestlers place in their weight divisions:

Jace Logan - 1st Place
Sky Carlson - 1st Place
High School Basketball traveled to Paonia, whose girls are ranked # 1 in the state. Our girls were ahead by 7 at half time, and ended up losing by 7. It was a fiercely competitive game, and shows that we can play with the best.
