Chaplain's Corner
Have you ever noticed that kids can ask some really difficult questions?
When my youngest daughter was about 5 years old, she asked me, “How come God doesn’t just heal all the sick people?” We had been praying for someone that was sick and who had been struggling for quite some time. It made sense to her. We prayed. The sick person should be better now, right? That makes sense to me too, but sometimes it doesn’t work out the way we want. Sometimes bad things happen…even when we’ve prayed. And what do we do when really difficult stuff happens? How do we talk to our kids about the difficult things in life that we all go through?
My best suggestion is to not focus on the why but to focus on the what. It’s okay to ask, “Why did this happen?” But the truth is we may never know. We can’t control the why. But what we can control is the what. Now that this has happened, what are we going to do? You know what we can do? We can be kind. We can help others.
Your kids may not know him, but I’m sure you all remember Mr. Rogers and his famous question, “Won’t you be my neighbor?” Mr. Rogers talked about a time when he was a child and something bad had happened. It scared him. And here’s what he said…
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”
When bad things happen, we may not understand why it happened. But we know what we can do about it. We can be a helper. We can help others. We can teach our kids to help others who are hurting. These are the things we’ve been teaching your players at practice over the past few weeks. Our last few themes have been…
· I’m like Jesus when I put others first.
· I worship God when I show respect and honor to others.
· I should treat others how I want to be treated.
Helping others…especially when they are hurting…is something we all can do. If you are hurting and if there’s a way we can help you, please let us know.
My prayer is God will give you wisdom to talk to your kids about the difficult questions of life and that he’ll help all of us to be a helper.
