A Little Classroom News...
Thank you, parents, for sharing your children with us! They are such a terrific group, and they are the reason visitors love coming into CDP. I would also like to use this opportunity to apologize. I have always strived to get this newsletter out every Friday, and I haven't done very well with this so far. I'm going to let my students teach ME a lesson by being good examples of 'if at first you don't succeed, try try again'. :) As always, if you'd like to contact me please use this email address: clmattoon@d47.org. ----Mrs. Mattoon
Language Arts
To prepare for our research writing project on the decade of 1900 - 1910 we have been learning about open and closed questions. Closed questions are those that only require a one or two word answer such as, "What is your favorite color?" An open sentence requires more conversation such as, "What do you like best about your favorite color?" This would be a good skill to practice at home ;)
FYI: Our students are fantastic muffin makers! We had our first cooking Friday, and students made delicious chocolate chip muffins. Yum!
Math
We've been continuing to learn some different visual cues to help us solve math word problems and have practiced using them. Word problems are always tricky! To practice those skills in a real world context we've also practiced some grocery store mathematics that require reading and problem solving.
Students have all done well with our whole number place value review, and we'll begin practicing rounding whole numbers up to the nearest ten thousand this week.
Science
Our sixth graders are learning more about classroom and whiteboard expectations in Mr. Apostol's room. Each student at every table in the room has a special job each day, and each job is important to the group's success. This week we've also been learning about lab safety. We'll probably be having a quiz on that this Friday.
Our 7th and 8th graders are all learning about data collection and graphing to display and interpret the data. Some of the vocabulary we're using is : area, perimeter, volume, mass, length, width, and height. A lab we're completing to practice these skills involve real dinosaurs! Well, maybe not real dinosaurs but they're still cool.
