A Note from the Language Arts Specialist
While school ends for summer, our learning never should! How can we keep our students working on literacy throughout the summer? Readingrockets.org gives some great tips for families looking to prevent the “summer slide” and celebrate the pleasure of reading throughout the summer. Remember that students need time in the summer to relax and have fun. These tips may help make reading more enjoyable for your family this summer.
1. Read aloud with your child every day.
2. Set a good example by enjoying reading yourself.
3. Read the same book your child is reading and discuss it.
4. Let kids choose what they want to read.
5. Buy books on tape, especially for a child with a learning disability.
6. Take your children to the library regularly.
7. Subscribe, in your child's name, to newspapers, magazines, or apps that include reading.
8. Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals.
9. Make trips a way to encourage reading by reading aloud traffic signs, billboards, notices.
10. Encourage children to keep a summer journal or reading log.
Don’t forget to visit the Oak Park Public Library for more fun summer reading opportunities!
Registration - All Students Must Re-register Each Year
Schools base their staffing needs on student registration, so please be sure to register. See the attached flyer for details.
A Note from our Nurse
This is a friendly reminder that I am not able to store any medications over the summer. On or before the last day of school, please pick up your child’s medication from the nurse’s office or send an email/note to school authorizing me to send it home with your child (emails/notes are for inhalers and Epi-Pens only). If I do not hear from you by the end of the school year, the medication will be discarded.
New Licensed Prescriber Authorization Forms and Emergency Care Plans must to be completed at the beginning of every school year by your doctor and require a parent/guardian signature (on the bottom of the Licensed Prescriber form)for students needing medication during the school day.
If your child will be using medication at school next year it is necessary for the doctor’s order to be renewed. Students with asthma, allergies, or seizures need to have an annual Emergency Action Plan developed and signed by a physician in addition to the District 97 Licensed Prescriber Authorization Form. All forms can be found at http://www.op97.org/health-services/forms or contact me to have a hard copy of the form(s) sent home with your child. Please have your physician complete the form(s) and return it to the school your child will attend in the fall.
Please contact me with any questions at 708-524-3098 or aguerrier@op97.org.
Celebrate Holmes Staff
Families, have you noticed a Holmes teacher or staff member who deserves a compliment or a thank you? Has this person made a difference for your child? Please share the reason in a brief email to me (czelaya@op97.org) so that we may recognize and thank them!
A FEW NOTES FROM YOUR PTO…
The school needs parent help to pack! If you have time to spare and can help teachers pack up their rooms next week, please email us at pto@holmespto.org. Please share the date and time you are available and we will help match you with a room.
Holmes is creating the first-ever PTO and School Volunteer Committee and we would love more members! Faith Harris, 1st-grade teacher, is leading a group of teachers and parents who will be charged with determining volunteer opportunities for our school. Meetings will occur starting in July 2018. Our goal is to share our volunteer opportunities before the start of the school year.
Please email pto@holmespto.org if you’re interested or have more questions.
The Village encourages recycling, however, plastic bags are a major problem for recycling facilities. Plastic bags get caught in the automated sorting equipment and bring the entire facility to a halt. The bags need to be found and removed by hand. This is a time consuming and often dangerous process that reduces the overall efficiency of the recycling facility.
Please do not put flexible plastics, like bags (garbage bags, shopping bags, zip-lock bags, bread bags, newspaper bags, etc.) and plastic film (shrink-wrap, plastic wrap around cases of water bottles, packing pillows, bubble wrap, flexible plastic food packaging, etc.) in your recycling. They are excluded from Oak Park’s curbside recycling program.
