Mustang Minute

Friday, September 30th

From the Principals' Offices

Greetings Mustangs!

We just keep getting busier and busier here at Brookwood! It was another fun-filled week at both schools. The highlight of the week, however, was our annual Gold Walk for Pediatric Cancer Awareness. BES and BMS students, staff, and families joined together this afternoon to walk the grounds at BMS in support of children fighting cancer and their families. It was great to see our "littles" buddied up with our "bigs" working together to help bring light to such a worthy cause. HUGE thanks to Ms. Mohr for organizing this event. If you would still like to make a donation to the Kisses from Keegan and Friends foundation, please contact your student's school office.

This coming week is Homecoming Week at Badger High School! We will be joining in the fun of homecoming week. We've got fun dress up days happening in both buildings all week starting with Favorite Sports Team Monday. Be sure to read on for additional dress up days!

This week also marks the beginning of Safety Month at Brookwood. In the coming weeks students in both schools will engage in several activities to promote both physical and emotional safety and well-being. This week, the main focus will be Respect & Anti-Bullying. We ask that all families partner with us by making time to have a conversation with their child(ren) about bullying and being kind to others. Click the button below for a list of important talking points. Upcoming topics include internet safety, school safety, inclusion, and drug awareness and prevention (upper grades only).

Lastly, Parent-Teacher Conferences are right around the corner, on Wednesday, October 26th and Thursday, October 27. Conferences are an important time for you and your child’s teachers to meet and discuss any celebrations, questions, or concerns you may have. Your child’s teacher will be sharing information about his/her performance in class and on recent assessments. Our goal is to accommodate all families so that we have 100% participation at both schools! A letter was sent home this week with your Brookwood student soliciting your preference for conference date, time, and format (in-person, virtual, or phone). Firm conference times will be communicated to families the week prior to conferences.

Enjoy this beautiful fall weather, Mustangs! Have a great weekend!

What's Happening in Mrs. Gahart's Class?

Mrs. Gahart's class has been so busy this week! We are writing poetry, learning about fact families in math, and building our reading stamina! Every single day we learn and do so much! In addition to our poetry books that we are writing we also wrote PUMPKIN acrostic poems. We wrote our own fact families on candy corn fact family forms. Most exciting of all, we made it to over 22 minutes of read-to-self stamina! Second grade is working hard!

What's Happening in Miss Bartucci's Science Class?

In Miss. Bartucci's science class, we are learning about how rocks break down through physical and chemical weathering. The student scientists got to explore the effects of chemical weathering. They worked with the materials such as vinegar, droppers, Petri-dishes, and even science goggles!! They were looking for a chemical reaction between the rocks (basalt, limestone, sandstone, and marble), and vinegar. We had a lot of fun the next day seeing the effects of the chemical reaction and the crystals that were left behind!

Reading Roundup!

We are SO excited to share our first Reading Challenge of the school year! Every month, we will have a new challenge for you to complete at home. Be sure to take a picture of you completing the challenge, and then send it to Mrs. Arshem by the end of each month. Pictures will be posted on our Genoa City Schools Facebook page, and some will even be featured in next month's Reading Roundup! This is open to students at both our Elementary and Middle School.

From the Athletic Director...

We had a wonderful final week of Brookwood softball! Both boys and girls played their hearts out all season, and it was always fun to watch! Coach Brill and I are already looking forward to next year!

Cross Country has their Conference Meet on Tuesday, October 4th, at Westosha Central! We’d love to see as many people as possible out there supporting our Mustangs!

Girls’ basketball starts next week on Thursday! Make sure you have a concussion form on file! Can’t wait to see you in the gym!

Our online spiritwear store is up and running! Please use the link below to order for all sports at Brookwood Middle School! This online store will be open until October 28th - no late orders accepted. All orders will be delivered to me to hand out at school unless you select the “ship to home” option at checkout. We will have another spiritwear store open during the month of January.

Go Mustangs!

Gearing Up for Parent Volunteering

Throughout the school year Brookwood has many opportunities for parents to partner with the school through volunteering. Some of these will include, but not limited to, chaperoning field trips, assisting during classroom activities, large school or district wide events, etc. To ensure the safety of all our students, all volunteers need to submit and pass a background check. These forms can be completed ahead of time and individuals will be added to the approved volunteer list. This is good for the school year. If you intend to volunteer, feel free to complete the attached forms and send the forms to your child's school office. Thank you for your cooperation and involvement.

Brookwood Clothing Closet

The Brookwood Clothing Closet is a free resource for students and families in need of gently used clothing. During Back to School Night, the clothing closet was open in the middle school art room. The next open shop night will be during fall conferences, however any students in need of clothing are welcome to stop in the art room before or after school. Families can also email Mrs. Garrett with specific requests for clothing or any questions.

School Picture Retake Day

If your Brookwood student was unable to get his/her picture taken at Open House, don't you worry! Picture retake day will be on November 1st during the school day. Information on specific times will be distributed as the date gets closer. We'll look forward to seeing those smiles!
