Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Community,
Next week at Shaw is a BIG week, please mark your calendar for all these great events!
Afterschool classes begin on Monday. Should a class not run for lack of registration, the vendor will contact you by the end of the weekend.
We will host our first Parent Education Night on Wednesday Evening, September 14th.
Our primary presentations (pre-school-kindergarten) will be held in the primary classrooms and will run from 5:00-6:00. You will be treated to an introduction of each of the areas in a Montessori primary environment. You will travel to several classrooms for overviews. Your child’s primary teacher has sent you an email as to where you should report to begin the presentation. Please check your email. If you have not received it, contact your child’s teacher.
Our middle school presentation (7th and 8th grades) will be held in the Media Center from 5:00-6:00. Our Middle School staff will present adolescent brain development and neurology. They will also share the social/emotional learning curriculum that is being explored in this beautiful environment.
Our lower and upper elementary presentations (1st-6th grades) will be held in the cafeteria from 6:00-7:00. Parents will revolve through lessons spending 7 minutes at each lesson. You will see a small bit of the vast and incredible elementary curriculum.
This is an opportunity for you to learn a bit more about the pedagogical practices around Montessori as well as be treated to “lessons” from the teachers. We strongly encourage all parents to attend---it will offer a window into your child’s day at Shaw Montessori. This is a parent only evening. Children need not attend.
On Monday, our 7th/8th grade competitive sports begin! Monday evening our Shaw flag football team will play Emerson School at Garfield School. Game time is 6:50. Thursday evening our volleyball team plays Edison School at 6:50 in the Herrera Performing Arts Center. Go Shaw Stars!!!! We look forward to an exciting season!!!
AND, come eat spaghetti and play BINGO with our community on Friday Night. Spaghetti dinners go on sale at 5:00, BINGO begins at 6:00. There are some incredible prizes for those lucky BINGO winners. See you there!
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Shaily Currie
Beginning Monday, September 12th, our Kindergarten students will take the iReady Fall Diagnostic for ELA and Math. Your student's teacher will be informing you of their particular testing days. The diagnostic results will become the new baseline for students' "My Path." Therefore, starting Monday, my Path homework will not be available for kindergarten students until they complete their diagnostic tests.
When tracking your student's progress on My Path, please note that iReady generates a weekly usage report that resets to 0 minutes on Sunday.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your student's teacher or me.
Shaily Currie, IEIS

Bingo Night Is Coming!!!
Bingo night will be hosted by Heather Vittori, Leiann Marries, and parent volunteers. It is on Friday, September 16th. All events will be held in the cafeteria, The clothing swap will be from 4:00-6:00pm . While that’s happening, Ms. Chan's class will be selling spaghetti at 5:00pm. Bingo will be from 6:00-8:00pm. Don't let money stop you from coming and having fun. If you need help, talk to Principal Engdall . The goal for bingo night is to bring families together after being apart for so long because of the pandemic. We hope to see you there.

Garden Update
Greetings!
Another week and another round of fun! This week we began our agua fresca block. We learned about the history of aguas frescas and made a delicious jamaica. Aguas frescas date back to before the time of Jesus. They began in parts of India and Africa. When the conquistadors arrived in the Americas they brought their version of aguas frescas which included the hibiscus flower bush. The Aztecs were making aguas frescas prior to the Spanish arrival. Their aguas frescas were similar, made of exotic fruits, nuts and grains. Modern Mexican culture took the agua fresca to another level. Today, it is a staple of Mexican cuisine and widely enjoyed in the Southwest, Mexico and beyond.
We also picked up some compost and soil from Singh Meadows. If you are in the business of amending or creating a garden space, I highly recommend you purchase some of Ken Singh’s product. It’s 100% organic and rich in micronutrients. The middle schoolers will spread the compost in our rows next week and we will begin planting! Super exciting!!!
Mark your calendars for September 21st. We will be hosting an agua fresca stand at pick-up and again before the PTA meeting. Please bring your cash and support our garden program! I’m also asking for a classroom volunteer to purchase vermicomposting bins for their child’s classroom. Each class needs two totes. They both need to be the same size and can be anywhere from a 12 Gallon to a 27 Gallon.
Here’s a link to the Home Depot totes:
Our parent workday is a month away! We will be excavating the perimeter of the field garden and planting some flowers. Please bring your shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows if you have them. ALSO, please bring a potted flower of your choice. We can transplant them at the end of the workday after we excavate and amend our area. The spectacular Mrs. Kutsko has created a sign-up portal for volunteers. You can register by clicking the link below:
Here’s my email in case you need to reach me:

Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bin.
If you have any flagstone cuts or woodcuts we will also take them. We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.
Mr. Moench
P.S. The class winner of the bottle cap drive will be rewarded with an ice cream and popsicle party in the spring!
