North Tiger Beat
September 14, 2020
Dear North Families,
Welcome to the new school year. Over the past two weeks, teachers have been preparing for the start of the new school year. As we all know, the preparations, restructuring, coordinating, planning, and learning of new information have been endless. We are very lucky to have the caliber of the staff here at North to take us through this journey together. We are all in this together, as this is new for all of us.
Full remote students are grouped with grade-level peers across the district to make up their remote classes. You should have received an email from your remote teacher Friday with instructions on how to log-in Monday.
All students in grades 1-5 will kick-off tomorrow, September 14th, with further introduction activities, establishing routines, and beginning to learn about each other. Our emphasis over the first few weeks of school will be on ensuring our students are connected to their learning environment whether it be full-remote, hybrid, or in-person. Please continue to be patient and understanding as we continue on this journey together. We are all learning and growing as we go.
Pre-K and Kindergarten teachers will be having their orientations this week. Kindergarten will be Tuesday, September 15th and PreK will be Thursday, September 17th. Please help us keep students and staff healthy and safe by following social distancing and wearing masks.
Respectfully,
Dr. Manchester

CHROMEBOOKS
If you did not pick up your child’s Chromebook this past week, it will be in your child's classroom for them to use when they return for in-person learning. Please remember that once your child comes in-person, they will need to bring their Chromebook in to use while they are at school. If you still need to pick it up, please contact your child’s teacher about a time and day to pick it up in the main office. If you did register over the last week and did not have a Chromebook ready for your child, please email Mrs. Fogg in the main office at birgit.fogg@somersetschools.org to find out when it will be ready for pick-up. In-person/hybrid students will receive their Chromebooks at Kindergarten registration. Full remote Kindergarten students can email the office to set up a time to pick up the Chromebook.
Google Account
Each student in the Somerset Public Schools is automatically assigned a Google account for use with school technology. The account begins with the two-digit year of graduation, followed by their first name, a period, and then their last name. As an example, 29william.weld@somersetschools.org. The password is a randomly generated password; please make careful note of the password, as passwords are always case-sensitive.
This account will follow your child until they graduate from high school, and neither their username nor their password will change over that time.
When students first open their school-owned Chromebook, they will be prompted to log on to their accounts. To sign into a school-owned Chromebook, your child should not enter the @somersetschools.org portion of their username, as the laptop is already a part of that domain.
To sign into a personal Chromebook they must enter the entire username, including the @somersetschools.org and their password. Letters were emailed out with your child's username and password.
If you have any questions or need tech support, please email addresses shown below:
christopher.green@somersetschools.org or june.mitchell@somersetschools.org.
Parent Cafe - Learn about a social emotional strategy we will be teaching all of our students - Zones of Regulation
Social-Emotional Learning is a priority, especially during this time. We all need to learn how to self regulate by learning to recognizing our emotions and subsequently having the skills to get us back to the "green zone", where we can focus and be in the mindset to learn.
The Student Support Team (SST) will be hosting a Parent Cafe to discuss our "Tier 1" social-emotional curriculum, Zones of Regulation. The elementary SST team will be assisting teachers and students throughout the school year to incorporate the Zones in their daily routine and language skills. We are hoping that parents can attend these cafes to learn more about the zones in order to create cohesion between school and home routines/ languages.
We will also be discussing the “at-home student support form” which will allow families to contact the elementary SST if there is a social-emotional concern for any of your students.
Please review the dates, times, and links to the zoom meeting. The meetings are split by grade level and will take place the week before each grade is scheduled to return to school. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
