Message From the Principal
Dear Wheeler Families,
Let me begin by thanking our hard working and dedicated PTO for beginning the year with so many exciting fundraising opportunities, family events, and for their financial support of our recent in-school assembly! Pie ordering, upcoming bake sales, and vendor fairs and the recent Trunk or Treat are some examples of the many things they do on behalf of our students and school! The PTO officers, with the support of many parent volunteers, continue to work tirelessly for the Wheeler School Community and I feel our PTO has grown larger and stronger as a result.
As I mentioned above, we recently had the good fortune of having Mr. Tommy James visit us to perform a 50 min anti-bullying assembly for the entire school. His program was quite entertaining yet it sent a very clear message to students:
What is bullying? It is when a student repeatedly picks on or physically/emotionally harasses another student.
Application of the W.I.T.S (Walk Away, Ignore, Talk it out, Seek Help) strategy when dealing with a student who is picking on another student Each student received a bookmark
Through kindness, strength, and self advocating, school is a safe, great place to be!
Wheeler Teachers followed up with their students the next day with reflection activities to assess what they learned and how they might apply it. They shared student responses with me and our students were quite insightful and clearly gained from this experience.
I will continue to say to students, teachers, and parents and to any person involved in supporting a child's development that the most underutilized ( but best strategy) a child can use to address a student who is picking on him or her is this:
Look the child in the eye, tell him or her to Stop and say…”I do not like you doing that to me. Do not do that to me anymore." Then, if it continues or not, let an adult know IMMEDIATELY.
I will be making my rounds to each classroom to continue to reinforce this message as I have done in the past. I am under no illusion that all of our children are flawless and children will sometimes make poor choices. However, I am very proud of the kindness, effort, and good citizenship I see from our students each and every day. We are extremely fortunate to have a strong Wheeler home/school connection that works together to make sure we raise good citizens.
Thank you and Sincerely,
Mr. B.
