This week, we began a new study in our Creative Curriculum ... The Ball Study. The children have asked questions, tried out experiments to solve those questions, and explored with our collection of different balls.
Why do we do a study about balls?
"Children love balls. They play with them in many different ways. They throw them, catch them, kick them, and roll them with seemingly endless delight. Children learn how natural forces, such as gravity and friction, affect the movement of balls, and they enjoy making balls, marbles, and other objects change speed and direction. The universal and enduring appeal of balls is evident in the traditional games children play with them and in the ways they invent their own ball games. This study shows how to use children's interest in balls to help them explore social studies and science concepts related to the features and nature of balls, and to use skills in literacy, math, technology, and the arts as they investigate."

Each child chose a ball to feature on their book page :)
Playdoh balls of different sizes raced down a ramp, with predictions and experimentation :)
We rolled different balls and measured with blocks to see which went the farthest :)
Measuring tools were used to see how high we could bounce different balls.
The children did ball puzzles, colored ball pictures and compared different balls.
Some chose to work with blocks and ping pong balls... they got very creative!!
Outside fun with balls!
Dot marker name pictures! We realized they made circles just like a ball :)
On Thursday, we participated in the school’s “Thoughtful Thursday.” The 3rd graders came down and shared the story “Rainbow Fish” with buddies in preschool and then worked with beads to make bracelets in the colors of the Rainbow Fish to remember the story. They were great with our little friends!
We got outside for some fun!
Thanks to Lilly’s mom who came in to be our Mystery Reader :)
