First Chapter Friday – Netflix November!
The 100 is the first novel in a four-book dystopian series written by Kass Morgan. Ever since a devastating nuclear war, humanity has lived on spaceships far above Earth's radioactive surface. Now, one hundred juvenile delinquents—considered expendable by society—are being sent on a dangerous mission: to recolonize the planet. It could be their second chance at life...or it could be a suicide mission. What’s even better? All seven seasons are now available to stream on Netflix. If you’ve already read The 100 series you should check out her latest novel, Supernova (now available in our library).
PowerSchool Student Portal Login Credential Update
After early dismissal on the afternoon of November 3, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) updated the student log in process for the PowerSchool Student Portal. Now that the updates are complete, students will use their EIPS credentials to login to the PowerSchool Student Portal or the PowerSchool mobile app. Student access to the portal and app may be intermittently unavailable while updates are taking place. Effective November 4, students will use the new EIPS login credentials to access the portal or app. Students who use the mobile app will be required to log out and back in after the updates are complete.
If students are having trouble logging in to PowerSchool after the change, they can contact their teacher or a school office staff member for assistance. This update does not affect the log in process for parents or guardians for the PowerSchool Parent Portal.

Strathcona Food Bank Donations
With Christmas just around the corner, the board of directors for the Strathcona Food Bank knows some EIPS schools may be hosting food drives in their schools. If schools wish to host a food drive, the food bank requests they conclude by December 17—before the food bank closes for the holidays. While the food bank had very successful food drives this year, there are always a few items that we don't get enough of. Current high-needs items include canned mushrooms, canned green or yellow beans, canned fruit, pancake mix and syrup, Stove Top stuffing, Hamburger Helper, bar soap, paper towels, facial tissue, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, disposable razors, conditioner and dry food for small/medium dogs. Thank you very much for your continued support of the Strathcona Food Bank. We are so very grateful to EIPS schools for the many years you’ve held food drives for us. Contact the Strathcona Food Bank office at 780-449-6413 (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to noon) to arrange for a donation pickup.
Christmas Sponsorship for Families in Need
AT Safety Training, in partnership with Salisbury Greenhouse, is sponsoring up to 20 families in need this holiday season. Sponsorship includes:
- Christmas meal – all necessary items to have a fantastic Christmas dinner
- Extra items to help ensure the family has extra food through the holidays
- Christmas hamper
- Christmas food
- Gifts for the family
- Christmas stockings
Generally, AT Safety Training requests schools reach out to the family and, upon receiving consent, provide AT Safety Training with the family’s contact information so they can hand pick wanted items for the children. Contact Veronica Mcleod with any questions or to pass along family contact information.

The in-person portion of the event brings together a wide variety of colleges, universities, polytechnic and private schools, and sector experts in one place. The virtual component will include additional opportunities to attend sessions from numerous colleges, universities and career sector experts.
Participating students and family members in either the in-person or virtual sessions will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from post-secondary and career vendors, ask questions, talk to experts about various career sectors, learn about future career trends and much more.
