Principal Updates
Happy New Year! I hope you all rested, celebrated with loved ones, and felt prepared to start the new year on a high note (for those of you whose new year falls on January 1st). To start off strong as we return from break, we've got quite a few things going on!
We’re preparing or our second round of parent teacher conferences. It'll be a time to discuss student progress so far this year, make or adjust continued plans for support, and celebrate successes. These are non-student days, but we do strongly encourage students to be present at the conference as they are a vital part of the conversation as well. The feedback is important for their growth as well! The sign up tool opens for families today at 5 pm. It’ll be on the district website, the school website, and included in our weekly newsletter. Here's the link.
I’m also working with a small group of teachers to plan our MLK Jr Day Assembly and some small activities/learning opportunities throughout that week. More detailed communication to families will come next week, but we are planning a kick off assembly on Tuesday January 17th then a few small activities throughout the week to continue learning. Mrs. Shaw has some great songs planned for the assembly, and we’re planning different read alouds and interactive bulletin boards to honor the life and continuing legacy of Dr. King.
We’re continuing with building our extracurriculars just as Hooptown comes to a close. World languages clubs begin this next week, and Karen Branin is starting a Girls Who Code club in February (more info to come). Some teachers in the upper grades may also be starting some homework clubs to support student learning, and I’ve got one or two other teachers interested in starting clubs. Fit for Bloomsday will start in March, and we’ll have another round of Lego Robotics later in the spring. I’m looking into ways to get student input in the types of extracurriculars they might like to see as well.
Mrs. Rose had her baby boy, Jameson, over break. Both are recovering well and enjoying the time they get to spend together!
I’m meeting soon to start discussing 5/6 promotion and what that will look like this year! Lots of great ideas, and we have some good connections with schools on the north side who already went through this to help with better understanding any logistics. More information will continue each month from myself and from the district about each step as 5th and 6th prepare to head to middle school.
New Year, Ongoing Reminders
- Breakfast begins at 8 am and morning line-up begins around 8:15. We do not have supervision for students prior to that time so, to keep everyone safe, please drop off after 8 am!
- During dismissal, cars can only stop and wait for students in marked spots along the drop off lane (or you can park and get out of your car in the actual parking lot). Please do not try to stop in other areas, particularly close to any entrances/exits to the lot - even if you think the cars might move forward soon. This blocks the entrance and causes a large back-up on 57th that impacts more than our school community, prevents our buses from entering to pick up students on time which then delays the rest of their route, and presents a safety hazard by potentially preventing fire trucks or ambulances from being able to enter in case of an emergency. If there is no marked spot to wait in, we ask that you circle and come back!
- Also during dismissal, if the car in front of you leaves or moves up then please follow suit... even if you see your child coming. This way we create space regularly and frequently for other waiting parents to get into the marked spots.
- Our lost and found is getting full again, please come check it out!
