September 1, 2022

Dear Quail Run Families,

We had an amazing first month back to school at Quail Run!

We are in full swing with our teaching and learning as we head into September. Hopefully, some cooler days will be in our future.

Please read through this monthly newsletter to see what is new this year and check out the video below to see what our students have been up to this last month. There is so much happening at Quail Run this month. Be sure to check out some of the volunteer opportunities as well.

Annual Update for ALL Returning Students

The Annual Update process is completed by parents or guardians online within Infinite Campus. This allows you to update information that may have changed in your household. This replaces the earlier versions of paper forms we called Emergency Cards. We request that this information is verified/updated yearly.

For additional information please click the Annual Update Smart Card or view this presentation for step-by-step instructions. There is also a short video on the process to assist you.

What is SEL and what does it mean?
Social-Emotional Learning: What Is SEL and Why SEL Matters

Second Step: SEL Curriculum for K-5

We have adopted a brand new SEL curriculum for K-5 students at our school this year, Second Step. We want your child to be as successful as possible at school. Success in school is not just about reading and math. It is also about knowing how to learn and how to get along with others. We will be using the Second Step program in your child’s K-5 classroom. Please check out our Family Welcome Letter to learn more about this program and access resources related to the program including caregiver resources, scope and sequence, and a list of supplemental books that teachers may incorporate. All K-5 teachers will be introducing the new program to students beginning Friday, September 2.

Sixth-grade teachers will be reaching out independently to provide more detail on our plans for sixth-grade SEL instruction.

Lunch Bunch Opportunity with Mrs. Albers, SEL Specialist

To afford our students more variety in where and how they spend their lunch/recess time, Mrs. Albers will be hosting voluntary student lunch meet-ups. On the Fridays she works on our campus, 5 students per grade level will be given the opportunity to join her for eating, followed by choices of gameplay, drawing, and on occasion some crafting. Please contact her with any additional questions or if you have donations or ideas for how best to keep kids engaged and excited during the meet-ups.

There are three upcoming national learning days in September:

  • Sept. 9: 9/11 Education Day (Note: Sept. 11 falls on a Sunday), where a portion of the instructional day will be spent providing age-appropriate education on the terrorist attacks of 9/11, 2001
  • Sept. 16: Constitution Day (Note: Sept. 17 falls on a Saturday), where we recognize the day the federal constitution was signed by recognizing this event and the significance of the constitution to the United States.
  • Sept. 23: Sandra Day O'Connor Civics Celebration Day (Note: Sept. 25 falls on a Sunday), where the majority of our day will focus on civics education.

spanish teacher update

We are underway with our Visa process for our new Spanish teacher and he will hopefully be arriving this month. He is going to be a wonderful addition to our school community and IB programme.

When he arrives, we are seeking some support from our community. He will need a place to stay while he gets settled. If your family or someone you know would be willing to host him and possibly rent out a room to him, please reach out to Mrs. Raymond. We are hoping to find him housing within walking/biking distance of our school as he will not have a car. Alternatively, it could be close to a bus line that can bring him to work.

We are looking for community members to help lead our school choir this year. This can be a volunteer or paid position. It is our goal that the choir will meet weekly and include interested students in grades 4-6. The choir practice could take place either before or after school! If you or someone you know is interested, please email Mrs. Raymond.

For more information on the choir program, please check out our PVSchools Choir Guidance from the PVSchools Fine Arts Department.

Student Advisory Committee

New this year at Quail Run, our Student Council officers will be serving on a Student Advisory Committee to Mrs. Raymond. They will meet monthly to share their feedback and vision for the school. They will work together to make Quail Run a place where every student wants to be!

New classroom technology

Last year we purchased new sound equipment through ESSER funding to be used in every classroom at Quail Run this year. Every classroom now has an amplification system, where students can hear the teacher´s voice lightly amplified around the room. Each system also includes a pass-around shared mic which allows students to use the system as well. We also upgraded to using a media hub in every classroom so any shared audio from a device will also be played through our brand-new amplification systems. Ask your students about the new sound in their classroom!

Helpful School Reminders

  • If you need to relay a message to your student during school hours, you can call the office or leave a message directly on our Voicelink account at (602) 449-5465. The office staff will NOT transfer calls to classrooms, as this will interrupt important instructional time.

  • If your child forgets their lunch, you may bring it to the front office before 10:30 am.

  • Students are also not allowed to bring Starbucks drinks, smoothies, etc. on campus in the morning.

  • Be sure to communicate end-of-day arrangements with your student in the morning, prior to coming to school. We want to ensure all students get home safely. If there are any changes in how students get home, please notify the office and the teacher.

  • School hours are from 8:45 am -3:15 pm. If you are picking up a student early, please be aware that every minute counts and minutes missed accumulate throughout the school year. Also, be aware that students cannot be called to the office early for an appointment. Students will be called from class at the time you arrive to check them out.

  • School breakfast is available beginning at 8:15 am. Please drop off by 8:30 am at the latest if your child is eating breakfast. It is the same purchasing system as our school lunches.

  • Birthday treats must be store-bought and easy to pass out for the teacher. No cakes that need cutting, please. Cupcakes are allowed this year. Balloons are not allowed on campus.

  • You will need your ID every time you pick up students prior to dismissal.

  • Your student will not be released if the person picking her/him up is not on the contact list. If you need to add a friend or family member to the contact list you will need to go to Infinite Campus to update Emergency Contact information through your annual update.

Purchasing a School Lunch:

The Nutrition & Wellness Department will return to charging students for their meals based on their free, reduced, and paid meal application status during the 2022-2023 SY.

The 2022-2023 Free & Reduced Meal Application is now available for parents to complete at EZMealApp.com. This paperless option is encouraged because online applications can be processed within 24 hours of their submission. Paper meal applications are available in our front office or can be printed from the Nutrition & Wellness website to be submitted to the department. All families are encouraged to apply.

It is extremely important for families to complete and submit the 22-23 SY meal application in order to avoid potential negative account balance charges.

Visit the Lunch Menu section of our website for more information about menus, meal prices, and to load money into your student´s lunch account.
