Sexton Mountain Elementary
I hope your family had an enjoyable summer. I know you are anxiously awaiting information about the new school year. Thank you for being patient as we figured out the details. There are still more details to iron out. However, staff will be working furiously the next two weeks to get everything ready for our first virtual day of school on September 14th. (Kindergarten students will start A-L on September 17, M-Z on September 18, and altogether on September 21.)
The Sexton Mountain staff and I are excited to welcome your student(s) back to school. This Fall will be different than the spring. We will have a set daily building schedule, from 8:30-2:30. Beginning every day at 8:30 your student will remotely join their class and teacher in a community meeting. The rest of the day will include both live teaching and assignments via the computer. Teachers will cover their normal curriculum. Students will receive grades and report cards this year. We know remote learning is not ideal for many learners. We are committed as a staff to support you and your child. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. We are here to help. The district has made some videos to help navigate the technology we will be using this year. We will also be switching out Chromebooks for IPADS for our students in grades 1-2 on September 10th from 10-12:30. Our Kindergarten students will also receive IPADS on their Special Kindergarten Kick-off day, September 10th from 2:00-3:00.
We are changing our Kindergarten instruction to focus on developmental inquiry through play. Kindergarten students are going to have some fun surprises in store this year.
Classroom teachers will be reaching out in the next two weeks to get to know your student and family. The purpose of this meeting will be to connect before the first day. Next week Grade level teams will send out information on this year's curriculum and parents will have an opportunity to ask questions.
The school supply list looks different than past years. The district has created a standard list. Many of the supplies from last year would work well again this year. Local businesses have donated supplies for families in need. Please call the office if you would like to stop by and pick up some supplies.
This summer two fourth grade teachers, Sue Olson and Jan Hunt retired. We are appreciative of the many years they dedicated to serving the Sexton Mountain community. We are welcoming some new teachers this year. Kimberly Skinner in Kindergarten, Hannah Galka in Second Grade, Heather Shoemaker in Third grade, Brett Walter and Kelsey Baldwin will be joining the Fourth grade team. In addition I want to introduce our new Assistant Principal, Autumn McConnell, and our new Intervention & Success coach, Alyssa McKillip. We are looking forward to the new school year.
