Glenealy School Newsletter

29th August 2019

Message from Chris

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Another fantastic week has passed and what a busy time it has been!

It was fabulous to see you all at the Meet the Teacher parents evening last week. It was great to see the community so engaged with the school, class teachers and the bigger themes we shared in The Centre. It was particularly positive to be able to celebrate the successes and all we have achieved with the CIS and IB evaluations last year, whilst also looking to build on that success for the future.

I want to thank parents for your positive feedback from the Meet the Teacher evenings - it was a pleasure to meet so many of you there.

It was also wonderful to meet many of you at the PTA Parent Coffee Morning yesterday. Meeting parents who are new to our community is such a pleasure and it was great to see so many new Year 1 parents at the coffee morning and keen to get involved in school life through the PTA. It was also a pleasure to continue to get to know more of our ‘experienced’ Glenealy parents who know the school so well. Thank you all for the insightful conversations.

I want to extend a very special thank you to the PTA for arranging such a welcoming event for the community. Your work for the school is incredibly important in ensuring we have a strong sense of community and that we work in partnership for the benefit of all children. Thank you again. It was also great to see that so many new parents signed up to help support the work of PTA over the coming year! We look forward to seeing you all at future events.

Tomorrow morning we have the pleasure of welcoming Stephen Loggie, Principal of Island School, who will provide a short presentation, followed by questions in The Centre for any parents who are interested in finding out more about the school. We look forward to seeing many of you there.

A special thank you also needs to be expressed to the children involved in taking action to recycle tetra paks on Monday - they did a fabulous job! You will find more about that later in the Newsletter.

We would like say a special thank you and farewell to Janice Man, our Finance Officer. Janice will be retiring after 10 years of service at Glenealy. An important member of our office team, she has been a tremendous support to parents and staff alike and will be greatly missed. I am sure you will join us all in wishing Janice the very best for her retirement.

Finally, our theme in our Social Emotional Assembly at the start of the week was “Inclusion”. The children have been working hard on being ‘includers’ and developing their skills in this area. From a personal perspective, it is wonderful to have joined a community that, through the work of the PTA, children and staff team, creates a truly supportive and inclusive school community. I look forward to all that next week brings.

Kind Regards,

Huge thanks to all the kids and families who helped us collect the tetra paks at the collection booth on the day - Well Done Everyone!

Special Talk by Professor Yong Zhao

Professor Yong Zhao:

" What Matters: Effects and Side Effects of Education ".

We are delighted to be in the position to offer to our ESF parents' community, Prof Yong Zhao's following Keynote: " What Matters: Effects and Side Effects of Education ".

In this presentation, Professor Yong Zhao brings extensive evidence to show that every child has both potential and need to become great. To help each and every child achieve their greatness, we need a different kind of education that focuses on enhancing the unique strengths and passion of each child. Education is to help each and every child discover and develop their strengths and passions with the goal to create value for others and the world. To do so, we need to make education personalizable by the child, instead of personalized for the child.

This presentation will take place on Saturday 7th September at Quarry Bay School, from 9.00 am to 10.30 am.

This is on a first-come, first-served basis - maximum 300 places
