Beers Law Lab
Why Aunt Zelda tipped over
Aunt Zelda's story
Zelda was in for an appendectomy, which she suspiciously died during. Our group had to figure out how much anesthesia the anesthesiologist had given Zelda and if it was the cause of her death. To test this we used 7 different percent concentrated solutions, 0%,10%,20%,30%,40%,50%, and 100%. To test there concentration we used a machine that measured how much light could pass through and how fast. Once we graphed each percentage's absorbency we then tested the anesthesia that was used on Zelda and concluded that it was 64% and the normal amount of anesthesia used for putting patients under must be less that 40%. The amount given during her surgery was too strong and most likely caused her lungs to collapse, killing her.
What is beers law
The beers law states that the quantity of light absorbed by a substance dissolved in a fully transmitting solvent is directly proportional to the concentration of the substance and the path length of the light through the solution
