From the Director

Dear CDS Community,

We've made it to the final week of the 2019-20 school year! And what a year it has been... I commend you all for rising to meet the challenges we've faced together with so much creativity, courage, and patience. We've all grown this year in ways we never could have predicted, but will surely help us to be more prepared for the future.

Beginning today, and continuing throughout the week, all CDS Middle School students will engage in a Phoenix Defense for each of their classes---a reflective, real-time, one-on-one conversation about their learning in Term 5. As an interactive, personalized reflection on learning goals, the Phoenix Defense strengthens and deepens learning, which is ultimately the reason for everything we do. The Phoenix Defense provides students with another chance to "show what they know" in case any evidence of learning was missed in the transition to online learning. We hope that students find it useful and see it as an opportunity rather than a source of anxiety. Very soon students will be free to enjoy some well-deserved rest and time (I hope) far away from screens!

On Wednesday morning we will hold our end of year assembly. We'll wrap up the school year on Friday morning with a virtual Arch Day (all are welcome to attend). On Saturday, June 13th we celebrate the CDS 8th grade Class of 2020 with a physically distanced graduation ceremony!

Let's finish the year strong CDS Middle School!

Arch Day - Online

We believe in the importance of honoring our school traditions and rituals. We will, therefore, hold a Virtual Arch Day celebration to mark the end of the 2019-20 academic year. We hope all students will join us online to mark the passage of time and symbolize a transition into the next stage of their CDS journey.

▶ All are welcome to attend.

▶ A Zoom link will be shared via email on the day of the event.

Collaborative Music in Isolation

During Term 5, students worked on a project called, "Collaborative Music in Isolation," which required students to work with their peers to create a music video.

Students chose a piece of music that they wanted to learn, recorded their parts after practicing, and edited the music together into a video production. As we were unable to put on a final concert this year, the students completed this project instead.

Though the videos may not be perfectly edited together, many are quite fun to listen to as it demonstrates our students' ability to be a musician and perform music, be an audio engineer to edit and sync parts together, and do so in isolation from one another. Though we may prefer to play music together in person, this was a good opportunity for students to be musical and learn about music production.
