Lady Blazer Basketball
Varsity - GEHS vs Lawrence
It was Sr. Night last Friday when the Lady Blazers tipped off against the potent high powered shooting of Lawrence High who brought in a 15-4 record. Seniors Brenley Cunningham, Riley Pemberton, Abri Leiker, and Olivia Hinck all started the game alongside freshman phenom Landri Schaffer. In the midst of a frustrating 6 game losing streak, the Lady Blazers were also a little shorthanded as starter Aaliyah Moss and reserve Aaliyah Green were unavailable to play. In front of a great and energetic crowd, the Lady Blazers got off to a great start opening up a 9-5 lead early in the Q1, but then a barrage of 3 point baskets from the Lady Lions guards quickly erased the early lead and took a 21-13 lead at the end of Q1. The Lady Blazers continued to battle with an even 12-12 Q2, down 8 at half 33-25. The pace slowed a little in the third, but the Lady Lions were able to extend their lead by 3 as they continued to ride hot shooting from behind the arc by #11 Brynnae Johnson who was 3/7 from 3 and had 22 points. Forcing some key turnovers sparked a record setting 68 steal on the season, Sr. Brenley Cunningham became GEHS’s all-time steals leader for a single season which helped a 11-3 run where the Lady Blazers came within 3 points of the lead 47-50. Unable to convert and the next possession and fight the clock, the Lady Blazers were forced to foul to extend the game, unfortunately falling 49-57. The Lady Blazers were led in scoring by Landri Schaffer who led all scorers with 27 on 12/26 shooting, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals. Abril Leiker added 8, Cunningham with 5 including a 3 to cut the led to 3 in the Q4.
JV - GEHS vs Lawrence
The JV Lady Blazers took on the Lawrence Lions Friday in a great up and down finale to end the 2022-2023 JV season. Playing down starter Aaliyah Green and reserve Oli Blazic and Liv Long, the JV Lady Blazers came out with a fierce attitude and really continued the common trend of the last part of the season, which was playing together as one unit. The JV Lady Lions were tough as they hit multiple shots from behind the arc to give them an early lead. The JV Lady Blazers kept it close though with a few three’s of their own by Joslyn Griffin, Anna Fitzgibbons, and Emmy Holle. The JV Lady Blazers ended up falling to the Lay Lions, but there was never any quit, all season, by this JV squad and the future looks bright! The consistently hustled and improved all season long and had a winning record of 10-7.
C-Team
The C-team finished their season at home against Lawrence Friday. The players had a lot of fun and worked hard to finish it with a win! Hayden Meats and Julia Pemberton led our scoring with 8 points each. Anna Conroy was getting work done on the boards with 11 rebounds. The final score was 30-11. Final record is 12-6.
Lady Blazer Wrestling
On Tuesday, the Blazers began their trip down to Park City (Wichita) to see how 7 ladies would fare against the toughest competition in the state! Qualifying 3 freshmen girls was a cool experience and they all won a match at state! In fact, 6 of 7 wrestlers won at least one match this year! Karen Rodriguez and Shelby Davis were leaders as they have been all year long winning multiple matches to place! Karen battled back after a tough quarterfinal loss to take 4th place in a tough bracket. Shelby was consistently the best wrestler on the mat all weekend long, and in her bracket full of upsets and surprises, she remained focused and battled with anyone who stepped across from her. After what can only be described as a nerve-wracking start to her finals match, she stayed composed and ended up reaching her goal of becoming a STATE CHAMPION! She is the first Lady Trailblazer to win a state title, and she is more than deserving. Her dedication to the sport is unmatched, and that showed this weekend.
State Qualifiers included: Bre Roberts, Kaira Mannio, Naomi Mayfield, Saoirse McCall, Ellie Rhea, Shelby Davis, Karen Rodriguez
Blazer Wrestling
6A Boys Wrestling Championships
Ten Blazers traveled down to the tournament where 9 won at least one match! Five qualifiers were seniors which means 5 wrestlers will return next year who have won a match at state! After a great first round, the quarterfinals and semifinals were not the kindest to the Blazers as all qualifiers ended up on the backside headed into day 2. They knew they had to do some damage to bring home medals. Everyone except Ty Hammers and Alonzo Borjas had to win 2 matches in a row on Saturday to earn a medal. The Blazers ended up dropping 3 more wrestlers in that opening round, leaving 6 left for medals as they headed into the "blood round" aptly named for it being an intense round of either medal or go home. The Blazers went an amazing 4/4 in the blood round medaling all 6 of the remaining wrestlers! Therron Meade, Kasen Smith, and Roman Clouse all earned their first state medals during this round!
The Blazers finished 9th in team standings and reached a SCHOOL RECORD 6 MEDALISTS. Ty Hammers was the highest placer taking 3rd place! Roman Clouse (5th), Kasen Smith (6th), Caden Smith (1-2), Kaden Schwendemann (1-2), Alonzo Borjas (4th), Therron Meade (6th), Zaine Mayfield (6th), Broque Moore (1-2), Ty Hammers (3rd), Chris Lewis (0-2)
