The Mindful Minute: Resilience!
Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Education
CARE is a unique program designed to help teachers reduce stress and enliven their teaching by promoting awareness, presence, compassion, reflection, and inspiration – the inner resources they need to help students flourish, socially, emotionally, and academically. In 2009 the US Department of Education, Institute of Educational Sciences awarded a grant to the Pennsylvania State University Prevention Research Center with a sub award to the Garrison Institute to refine the CARE for Teachers program and to complete a preliminary pilot study of its efficacy in reducing teacher stress and improving teacher well-being, efficacy and mindfulness. The study started in Pennsylvania at a pro grow day. Title 1 school with 89% free reduce lunch

87% “strongly agreed” or “agreed” that this type of program should be
integrated into preparation and in-service training for all teachers
96% reported CARE improved self-awareness
92% reported CARE improved well-being
77% “strongly agreed” or “agreed” they are “better able to manage
classroom behaviors effectively and compassionately”
83% “strongly agreed” or “agreed” they are “better able to establish
and maintain supportive relationships” with their students
76% “much better” or “better” prosocial and on-task student behavior

57% “much better” or “better” student academic performance
