PAWS
Oley Valley Elementary School - October 2017
Principal's Update
Happy Fall! The upcoming months at OVES will be filled with many different activities. Students will participate in the PTO Fun Run and the school-wide Halloween Parade during the last week of October. In November OVES will host our annual Veterans Day Lunch-in, invite parents to OVES for parent-teacher conferences, and complete the first trimester of school.
The students have been doing an awesome job earning PAWS cards. As a school the students have earned over 3500 PAWS cards. Students can earn individual rewards as they accumulate cards and the students work together to earn school-wide rewards. Students are entered into a weekly drawing for prizes once they earn their first 10 PAWS cards.
We continue to look for ways to get the students of OVES involved in the school. In the upcoming month we will be starting a School Safety Patrol. The Safety Patrol consists of fifth grade students who want to help and assist staff in keeping the school a safe place during arrival and dismissal of students. Students will be reminding students to walk in the hallways and when boarding buses and vehicles. The students will be looked upon to be leaders of the school.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns, and/or celebrations of OVES, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Respectfully,
Dr. Matt Broskey

What's Happening at OVES...
Kindergarten
We are cooking in Kindergarten! During Oley Fair week, Kindergarten students made butter and learned fun facts about farm animals. We also learned about Johnny Appleseed and made our very own crockpot applesauce. Zero the Hero has been helping us count the days of school and learn how to count by tens. We have been working hard to practice our beginning sounds and learn how to read sight words. Something new this year in Kindergarten are our fine motor centers. Upon arrival each morning, students are enjoying fine motor skill practice in engaging center activities.
Second Grade
The second grade team is excited to work on a cross-grade level project, with the 5th grade team at the end of October. Each of the 2nd grade students will be paired up with a 5th grader to work on a scarecrow project. The students will be researching the origin of the scarecrow and its purpose, along with creating a scarecrow craft. Mrs. Conrad, our Librarian, will also be assisting us by helping to organize user friendly web sites to obtain the scarecrow information. At the completion of the project, the students will be allowed to do a short creative writing piece together. It is sure to be a super fun time!! We can't wait to see how creative our kids can be!!
Third Grade
Third grade would like to welcome Mrs. Katie Klersy to the third grade team. Mrs. Klersy in a long-term substitute in the learning support classroom, here until December. She is a graduate of Messiah College, where she played softball. Mrs. Klersy is a newlywed, married in August. Her interests include hiking in the woods and playing sports. We are pleased to welcome Mrs. Klersy to our Oley Valley Elementary School Community.
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade ELA students recently finished the first lesson of Unit 1 in their Journeys series. We read the fiction story “Because of Winn-Dixie,” which focused on story structure elements and the value of friendship. Students then reviewed story structure elements by creating a flipbook for the common folktale “The Three Little Pigs.” We also learned about subjects and predicates when writing complete sentences, and wrote a “wanted” poster to advertise for a friend. The poster focused on good character traits necessary to form friendships. Next, we will learn about the life of Martin Luther King Jr., and begin writing our descriptive paragraphs on our favorite places.
In Math, students will be working in Chapter 2 on 1-digit multiplication and begin Chapter 3 on 2-digit multiplication. Students need to practice their multiplication facts and do Xtra Math on the computer. Reminder: students can access the math book, homework, and digital lessons through Think Central from home.
In Science, we have started off the year learning about the scientific method. We have been busy practicing the various steps by completing multiple experiments. In addition, we have focused on scientific tools and their use. We will be finishing up this unit mid - October.
Our next unit of study will be Earth and Space. We will explore the International Space Station, learn the four moon phases, model the Sun-Earth-Moon system, understand how rotation, revolution, and tilt give us day and night, and seasons. Lastly, we will review the 8 planets.
In CBL, students have been practicing map skills and learning about the five regions of the United States. “Expert” groups will be presenting information about each region. Next, we will be focusing on the regions of Pennsylvania and the geography within each region of our state. In addition, many students have shared interesting articles and current events for the first trimester.
Fifth Grade
Fifth Grade has been off to a busy and exciting start this past month! Keep up to date with any upcoming homework, projects, or technology driven opportunities on our 5th Grade webpage (found under “Elementary,” “ES Homework Pages” on our district website).
English Language Arts, with Mrs. Parson and Mrs. Muriel, approached the beginning of the school year with a new endeavor; a thematic focus on kindness through our novel reading and analysis of the novel "Wonder." Yes, it is the same “Wonder” that is being debuted as a movie coming out in mid-November; a great family opportunity to make a connection with the focus from class. In addition to the novel, we are under way with spelling lists, and fluency poems (keep an eye out for these in your child's ELA folders for studying purposes and signatures). AR (Accelerated Reader) books have been chosen and tests are available to be taken online in school; our first trimester goal is 1 Fiction Chapter book, 1 Non-Fiction book, and 1 of their choice. Please ask your children about their selected titles, and encourage them to read and share the stories with you.
In Math students have accomplished chapter 1; focus on powers of 10, order of operations, and multi-digit multiplication. Please encourage your students to keep practicing at home with any of our shared resources. We have been utilizing our 1:1 laptops to reinforce math skills and challenges (between both teachers Extra Math, Khan Academy, First in Math, and Prodigy have all been introduced and can be accessed at home, too). Mrs. Swoyer’s students created math/art symmetry projects, and got introduced to screencasting their lessons (lesson videos can be accessed on the HW page for reiteration at home). Mrs. Tulone’s math classes have enriched their financial literacy by beginning their Classroom Economy system, and some have even begun volunteering at the building’s School Store helping not only with younger grades making purchases, but also being a cashier.
Science has completed their Observation Lab with Mr. Daniels, and created samples for their controlled experiment. To accompany that, in the workbooks they are finishing Unit One: The Scientific Method and Tools that Scientists use. Lastly, students will be practicing measurement with the metric system, a very important skill in not only science this year, but also math class.
Lastly, Ms. Gardecki’s Social Studies classes have been focusing on U.S. geography, especially with their U.S. Postcards project. In support of recent national holidays students celebrated Patriot Day & Constitution Day in classes. Begin thinking about Current Event research for second trimester, they should be familiar with doing one this trimester.
Specialist
September 15th was International Dot Day!
Thanks to our staff at OVES that participated in this fun school wide event. Together we celebrated the book The Dot by Peter H Reynolds. According to their website http://www.thedotclub.org/dotday/
over 10 million people from 170 countries joined our celebration of creativity and decided to MAKE THEIR MARK and change the world!
During library classes, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders participated in a Breakout EDU activity to celebrate Dot Day and used teamwork and persistence to solve clues to unlock our box!
First Grade
First grade had a great field trip to Grims Orchard. It was a fun and exciting day. A big thank you to all the parents who volunteered.
