Ms. Okoro's Second Grade Class
Welcome!
I’m excited to work with you and your child this school year! This is my third year teaching at Elsa England Elementary. I look forward to a year full of learning and second grade adventures. I received my MBA with a specialization in Marketing, and I have my BA Degree in English. Education is extremely important to me. As we learn, we grow, and I believe children should be given the best opportunities to develop a desire to become life-long learners.
I love working with children, reading, writing, photography, volunteering, learning new things, traveling, and cooking. It is a blessing to be able to work with my class every day. I teach with a passion and strive to instill a great work ethic in my students. I’m thankful for the opportunity to be a positive influence in your child’s academic and social growth! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns throughout the school year. Thank you!

Students will be working with computers this year which often require headphones. Although we do have headphones at school, many children like to bring their own. You may send any type that is comfortable for your child. Students keep these headphones in their desk and they will be returned in May.
Here's a look at what we will be learning this week:
Reading: Readers will learn how main characters can be described through traits, motives, and feelings.Writing: Writers will identify the tools and strategies used to understand and craft stories.
Math: We will understand and use base 10 to read, write, and compare numbers.
Science: As part of our PBL (Problem Based Learning) we will research how flooding affects our local and global environments and communities. Second graders will also be organizing a donation drive for those who were affected in our recent floods.

Behavior Log in Daily Folder
If your child had a great day regarding behavior, no news is good news. I will not write in folders unless there is a problem. You do not need to sign it each day. When behavior concerns arise during the day, they will be addressed with the following sequence of steps:
Warning (W) – Discussion with child. Redirection using PAWS expectations.
Step 1 (1) – Time away from group
Step 2 (2) – 10 minutes Think Track at recess or time away from group or action plan
Step 3 (3) – Call home/ or action plan
Step 4 (4) – Office referral
Please note that the above steps will be indicated on the behavior calendar with codes such as W and a written description of the problem in the “Behavior” section of the homework folder for that particular day.
Grading Policy
Classroom Assignments: Students do not receive traditional number/letter grades (e.g. 100A, 80B, 70C) in second grade. Many assignments, including homework, will be graded for completion using a check mark or star. Increasingly throughout the year, assignments and tests will be marked with the total number correct over the total points possible to help teachers assess mastery of concepts. Rather than focus on grades, we emphasize the learning process and strive to spark intrinsic motivation. Thank you for supporting our efforts to inspire lifelong learners!
Report Cards: The RRISD Primary Report Card is a standards-based continuum, meaning that progress is reported on the knowledge and skills your child is expected to master at each grade level. The continuum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and ranges from Performance Level 1 to Performance Level 4. Please review the report card rubric for a more in depth explanation.
Level 1 - Exhibits skill/concept with direct guidance
Level 2 – Exhibits skill/concept with minimal guidance
Level 3 – Exhibits mastery of skill/concept
Level 4 – Exhibits understanding beyond grade level expectation.
Teachers assess a student’s performance level through observation, work samples,
dialogue, performance tasks, and other informal and formal measures. Students are retaught at the time of need and given multiple opportunities to show mastery of a
concept or skill.
