Wisdom from the Queen Bee Mrs. Starlin
Please enjoy the pictures from our raffle ticket drawings from our Read-a-thon. Students were drawn to win prizes both for how many minutes they read and donations received. Read-a-thon has been a huge success. Please continue to read. From our profits we are researching a portable speaker system for our gym and our Fine Arts Nights. We are also adding more instruments in our music class to allow more students to participate regularly. We appreciate all of your support reading with your child and getting donations. Great job everyone!
Nurse's Notes
The Mobile dentist was here on Wednesday. We did not have time to get through the entire list of kids. If your child was seen they would have brought home a paper with their results from the dentist. If you have questions please call the school nurse. We are hoping to get another day soon to finish up our list, but no promises due to the mobile dentist having a very busy schedule. The children who were not seen today will be my priority kiddos in the spring when the mobile dentist returns.
Also we are in need some items for our clinic to loan out when students have accidents or spills. If you have any of the following gently used items (hand-me-downs are great as long as they don't have large stains or holes) that you would want to donate to the school clinic, we would appreciate it.
- Little girl tennis shoes (all sizes, but especially smaller sizes)
- Girls underwear (size 4T-8), boys underwear size 4-5
- Girls Leggings or sweatpants (4T-10)
- Boys sweatpants or jogging pants (4T-10)
- Child size belts
Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Tucker
As a parent or caregiver, you can help your child gain confidence. Teach your child to do something new or unfamiliar. Encourage them along the task. Allow them to finish a puzzle or project by themselves and let them know that you believe they can do it themselves. Your encouragement and being able to try in an environment where they feel safe can give them the confidence to try other new things when they aren't with you. Remember - mistakes are ok - they are a part of learning.

Second Step Program
Lesson 5 this week focused on being assertive - which is just a big term for being able to ask for what they need in a respectful way. Sometimes our kids feel like they should know it all on their own or they think they may need help all the time. Finding a balance is part of learning to be a good learner. There are times where students need to try first, but when they are truly stuck the learning stops. Teachers cannot read their minds (and neither can parents) so being able to voice what they need in a polite way can help everyone move forward. Please see the attached Home Links (English and Spanish for both grades) for more information.
Speech and Language Tidbits
Speech and Language: True or False
Stuttering is caused by bad parenting or a traumatic event.
False: stuttering is a neurodevelopmental disorder due to a difference in development of the speech motor planning system. It is a result of a brain difference.
