Sawnee Elementary
January 2023 Newsletter
A Note from Mrs. Davis
Dear Sawnee Families,
We hope everyone had a wonderful and restful break. It is wonderful having the students back though! Second semester will fly by with many exciting events in the coming months. Be sure to check our website, newsletter, and social media for updates.
Can you believe it is time to think about Kindergarten registration for the 2023-2024 school year? Information and links are included in this newsletter. Please help us spread the word so we may welcome our new Sawnee students as soon as we can. We will have more dates regarding screening, special Kindergarten events, and tours soon.
Speaking of Kindergarten, they are kicking off the month by inviting all of our students to dress like you are 100 years old to celebrate the 100th day of school. The date for this is January 24th. Teachers will be sending home the flyer and we will have reminders on social media. It is always fun to see the students dressed up like this and what they think a person who is 100 should look like.
Since December was a short month, we will pick up our Chief Leader Award in February. It is always wonderful to recognize our students doing an outstanding job. We continue to receive Positive Office Visits forms from our teachers too. This helps us recognize everyday things our students are doing. If your student comes home with a note signed by an administrator - don't be alarmed! This is our way of supporting the good work our students do everyday.
You may notice or hear of more volunteers in the buildings beginning this month. We are excited to kick off Watch Dog Dads, which is open for anyone to volunteer. If you would like more information or want to sign up, please contact Mr. Michael Vorick. You even get a cool shirt! Also look for monthly classroom opportunities from your child's teacher to volunteer in the classroom.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out should you need anything. We appreciate your feedback and support. Sawnee is a family!
Sincerely,
Kimberly Davis
Principal

7 Mindsets - Live To Give
The Live to Give Mindset teaches the importance of serving others while maximizing our own potential. It tells us that abundance in life is a cycle; in order to receive love, respect, and financial security, we must first learn to give those things to others. This mindset also teaches us that the greatest gift we can ever give is to find and leverage our unique genius to maximize our positive impact on the world, knowing that good things will be returned to us in kind. In the lessons for this mindset, we guide students to think about the impact they want to make and the legacy they want to leave.
The four components of Live to Give are:
1. Stretch Yourself
2. Make a Difference
3. Receive Gracefully
4. Create a Legacy

Cafeteria News
Greens: Collards, Mustards, and Turnips
Collard Greens: Collard Greens are native to North America and have been a traditional part of Southern American diet for hundreds of years. They are an excellent source of vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Calcium, a rich source of Vitamin K, and a good source of Iron, Vitamin B-6, and Magnesium.
Mustard Greens: The mustard plant is most well known for its tiny, yellowish seeds that produce the most popular condiments on Earth, mustard. But for centuries, a range of cultures have used the plant's green leaves for food and health purposes, such as: Antiseptic, diuretic, detoxifying and treatment of sore throats. Mustard Greens are rich in important plant compounds and micronutrients, specifically vitamins A, vitamin C and Vitamin K.
Turnip Greens: Turnip Greens are one of the oldest and hardiest vegetables. They grew wild in Siberia when dinosaurs roamed the earth. You can eat both the roots and the leafy greens on top. Turnips are full of vitamins and minerals like: Calcium, Folate, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, and vitamin C.

~ School Attendance is very important to the success of each student.
Sawnee Elementary has a “Strive for Less than Five” unexcused absence per year policy. We support every student in reaching his/her greatest potential and encourage parents to support children in maximizing academic instruction opportunities. Some of the potential consequences of absenteeism are listed below. We understand that injuries and illness occur. As such, parents should send in a doctor's note for necessary absences.
