In this e-bulletin you will find information about upcoming Psychiatry events in our community, national conferences, podcasts, webinars, fellowship and scholarship opportunities, and more.
PSYCHIATRY STUDENT INTEREST GROUP NETWORK
The Psychiatry Student Interest Group Network (PsychSIGN) is a national network of medical students interested in psychiatry, from those with a rough interest in the brain and mind to those already in the residency application and match process. PsychSIGN is comprised of psychiatry interest groups at medical schools across the country. Member schools are divided into regions depending on the school’s location. Each school is headed by a Region Chair elected by PsychSIGN members at the national convention. (UMN is in Region 4.) Regions get together for the region conference annually and are kept up to date with National PsychSIGN and the APA through newsletters and monthly updates. There are no membership costs for the schools in PsychSIGN and the events held are also open to the students at no cost. Join PsychSIGN for free today!

Evaluation Training for Asylum Claims: Mental Health and Medical
Location: UMN Law School
Walter F. Mondale Hall | 229 19th Avenue South, MPLS
Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), and our local immigration attorneys, tell us one of the most potent interventions is to help asylum seekers. Almost always asylum seekers have a severe trauma history and mental health issues. Of course they do. If the attorneys can get a mental health evaluation for their clients, it often helps the asylum case. These evaluations are somewhat different that what we usually do and the write-ups contain unique elements. It is best to receive training on how to do these evaluations before attempting to complete one. The attorney requesting the evaluation will help you, but the training is important. These assessments are essentially one time consults, although it is often a good idea to meet with the individual more than once. Locally, there are not many people who provide these assessments and the demand is great (and growing). Our attorney colleagues are asking for our help.
These mental health asylum assessments can be done by psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, LMFTs and nurse practitioners. There are some differences in the types of assessments done by each group and that will clarified at the training. Trainees from psychology, psychiatry residency, child fellowship and social work are welcome to attend.
