Sharing The Homeschool Heart...Reflections on worry and the homeschool parent.
This summer, I have been able to reflect a lot on the last 11 years of homeschooling. I remember all the fears I have every time I talk to one of you and listen to what's on your heart. Everyone's homeschool path is different, and my experiences aren't going to be yours, but I feel like I should share some of my thoughts from this part of the journey. Starting out, I didn't know what I was doing. My kids didn't fit into the boxes I needed them to, and it made homeschooling very hard. After about two and a half years, I began to see that jumping outside of the box made the most sense. It's where we thrived; it's where we found the most joy; it's where we made strides toward success. Jumping outside the box and not worrying about what people thought about us, or what their opinions were about how to homeschool, or how my second grader wasn't like the rest of the second graders in the public school down the street; we were able to find freedom and joy in our daily routine. And even more so now, I see the fruits of our out-of-the-box education and our willingness to be uncomfortable and not fit the mold. I had to choose individual paths for each of my kids because they were individuals. My oldest struggled in different ways that her peers weren't typically struggling with within the classroom. I knew in my gut that it would just take time and all the pieces would fit into the puzzle correctly for her at just the right moment. I was completely right. I just had to be comfortable on her schedule. Now she's thriving in classroom settings and does well in school; she loves to write and read.
The two things that I stressed most about during the first seven years of homeschooling were whether or not my oldest would write and read well. She writes and reads so well it makes me laugh every time I think about it. The exact thing I would stress about day in and day out for years is what she loves to do the most now at 15 years old. It's such a good lesson for me because while I believed in what I was doing, I still let fear linger there for many years.
I beg you to learn from my mistakes and save yourself so many precious moments of worry that are unnecessary. Providing a loving, vibrant, education-filled environment in an eclectic way can get you to the results that you desire for your kids. I promise! Your dedication to their education via being with them, making eye contact with them, dialoguing all day with them, and just generally being interested in what interests them builds the best foundation for education. You spend their childhood growing up with them feeding into their lives and learning more about them so that you can provide opportunities where they will thrive. That's parenthood, and that's also home education. And all those little parts that seem to not work well for them at one point will eventually work well when you've laid the necessary foundations. When you're there for support regularly, every single piece does fall into place. Some children may not be excellent writers, that's okay! Some children may wait to be terrific writers, and it pops out when they're 14, and you had no idea! This journey is so rewarding and staying confident and listening to your gut will produce the results you're hoping for; stick with it, weary homeschool warriors!

This Week's OSP (Online Subscription Package) SPOTLIGHT: Mango Languages
By opting into Mango Languages you will receive:
- A parent account where you oversee your student
- Mango grades the work for you!
- Access to the progress your student is making
- A student account for every student that opts in
- Access to the 70+ language courses that Mango offers
FAQ
Q: Can Mango Languages be approved for HS credit or as an "A-G" class?
A: In order to take any world language course for general credit, a student must show proficiency in all world language standards. Mango Languages is a wonderful supplementary option but needs to be offered with a standardized curriculum or used alongside world language maps for college and career-high school credit. Inspire does not have an "A-G" approved option for all languages, so the student will need to take the course with an approved "A-G" provider, and may use Mango Languages to supplement the course.
Head over HERE to see more about Mango Languages!
For more details on this OSP option and all the other OSP subscriptions, head over to the OSP Handbook.

Hi everyone! I am a mom of 3 awesome kids ranging in age from 11 to 6 years old. My husband and I are high school sweethearts and have been married for 16 years. Having homeschooled our children over the last 7 years in 3 different states, I've found homeschooling here in California, especially with Inspire Charter, has been a great fit for our homeschool journey. I am grateful for our ability to homeschool so freely and I aspire to assist other families with their own homeschool adventures!
