CTE Director's Message
2023 - 2024 school year is all about taking Pender County Schools CTE to the next level. Our theme for this year is "Level UP". We plan to level up in impact, student success and community economic mobility. We have an amazing staff, programs, students and plans in place for this upcoming school year.
This school year we are planning to continue to engage our students in unique experiential learning activities that are preparing them for their futures. These activities are helping to equip our students with the tools to be enrolled, enlisted or employed upon graduation. What amazing opportunities we are providing for students in Career and Technical Education.
Huge thank you to all CTE teachers, leadership and staff for all that you do for our students daily!
Pender HIgh School Health Science II Students Participate in Face to Face Interviews with Health Professionals
These students completed professional resumes, cover letters, and practiced interview skills for a week!! We invited many of our businesses from our area to come and conduct interviews with students over three days. Novant Health, Food Lion, Walmart, Wallace Health and Rehab, Burgaw Veterinary Hospital, Piggly Wiggly, Myriad Home Care, and volunteers from the school board including Brent Springer and Beth Burns came to assist with the interviews. Several students actually got call backs from the businesses so this was a successful project!!
Health Science II:
This course is developed to help students expand their understanding of the healthcare industry, including employability skills, safety and infection control procedures, and clinical skills used by allied health professionals. In addition, students will demonstrate their understanding of cardiovascular and respiratory systems by applying BLS CPR skills. Projects, teamwork, and demonstrations serve as instructional strategies to reinforce the curriculum content. English language arts and science are reinforced in this course.
Heide Trask High School Public Safety Gets Visits from Pender and Rocky Point EMS and Fire
Public Safety Course:
This course provides basic career information in public safety including corrections, emergency and fire management, security and protection, law enforcement, and legal services. FEMA certifications NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 are also a part of this course. Additionally students will develop a personal plan for a career in public safety. The course includes skills in each area, using resources from the community to help deliver instruction to the students. English language arts are reinforced.
Pender County Schools Participates in National Manufacturing Day by visiting local Manufacturers Mojotone and Onslow Bay
Celebrated nationally on the first Friday in October, MFG Day is manufacturing’s biggest annual opportunity to inspire the next generation, positively shift perceptions about our industry, and build the foundation for the manufacturing workforce of the future.
MFG Day is an initiative of the Manufacturing Institute. The MI builds, diversifies and strengthens the modern manufacturing workforce, with the goal of furthering individual opportunity, community prosperity and a more competitive manufacturing industry. The MI engages underrepresented communities and shifts perceptions about careers in modern manufacturing, leads skilled training and career development programs, provides thought leadership and research on the changing state of the workforce and builds partnerships to scale up its impact on manufacturing in the United States. As the 501(c)3 nonprofit workforce development and education partner of the National Association of Manufacturers, the MI is a trusted adviser to manufacturers, equipping them with solutions for the industry’s toughest challenges.
Pender High School Students Participate in the SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 Masonry Competition
Widely referred to as the “Road to Las Vegas,” the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 Regional Series test’s the speed, skill, and stamina of bricklayers by determining who can build the highest and best 26-foot-long brick wall, in only one hour. The stakes are large as only one mason per regional competition will advance to Las Vegas at the World of Concrete trade show on January 24th, 2024 with a chance to win the title, “World’s Best Bricklayer.” The contest’s total payday is valued at over $125,000, including a Kubota RTV X1140, Essick Pro12 Mix and much more.
Topsail High School Culinary Students Hosts First Pirate's Den of the 2023 - 2024 School Year
Culinary Arts and Hospitality:
This course is designed to introduce students to the hospitality and foodservice industry by learning about components of professional practice and building basic knowledge and skills in food preparation, garde manger, baking, and food service operations. The introduction includes students learning food safety, breakfast cookery, salads and sandwiches, quick breads and cookies, and dining room service. Art, English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies are reinforced.

Portrait of a Graduate
An initiative led by the N.C Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to define the skills and mindsets students need for success after high school has been unfolding since March. Now, with the help of 1,200 North Carolinians across the state, this grassroots-informed Portrait of a Graduate has been finalized.
Revealed October 18th the result of that effort – known as the Portrait of a Graduate – aims to ensure that North Carolina students are well equipped for the broadest range of postsecondary opportunities. Aligning with State Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Catherine Truitt’s 2022 focus on the “Year of the Workforce,” the Portrait can be adopted by schools and districts to better prepare the state’s 1.5 million students for civic life, career or college.
As determined by the design teams that were part of the initiative, the statewide Portrait identifies seven competencies that students should possess upon graduation from high school to help them thrive in the 21st century.
These include:
- Adaptability
- Collaboration
- Communication
- Critical Thinking
- Empathy
- Learner’s Mindset
- Personal Responsibility
My Future NC Data
PCS CTE's vision of ensuring that students are enrolled, enlisted or employed are aligned with My Future NC and House Bill 664. To ensure that the state remains economically competitive, the state shall ensure that by the year 2030, 2 million 16 to 24 year olds will have earned a recognized industry credential or post-secondary degree.
