6th Grade Announcements


  • Washington, D.C. 2024 - Please contact Carmen Marshall (Barry 8th grade Social Studies teacher) if you would like more information about this Barry tradition! (marshalc@platteco.k12.mo.us).

  • Students should be sending you an email every Monday through a Google Doc. In FPC, students are checking their grades and creating goals for the week and are required to share it with you. If you could please follow up with them at home on their goals as we will be checking in with them at school as well.

  • If you cannot access your student’s Live School account, please reach out to Mrs. Sullinger and she can give you the access code needed to log in. This is a great way to check on your student’s behavior in classes, tardies, and another way to monitor missing assignments/homework.

  • 1st Quarter PACE is over, but you can begin signing up for 2nd Quarter PACE. PACE will start again for 2nd Quarter on Tuesday, November 1st. Sign up here: https://forms.gle/85LirptLfX6NmjqK8

6th Grade Transition Night (Repeat)

AFTER SCHOOL ACADEMIC LAB PROGRAM

Our Academic Lab program has started. What a great thing! This program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to continually improve on what they are learning by providing them a place after school to get homework help, re-take a test, or just have a quiet place to do their work. As a reminder, we have two sessions held in the Library after school on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:55pm - 4pm. We will have bus transportation after Academic Lab to transport students home. Please don't forget to sign up by 1:00 PM the day of! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!

Barry Archery Season 2022 - 2023

Archery season is just around the corner. We have a strong and growing program that we hope you will consider joining.


↠ Try-outs: Monday, October 17th. Use this link for sign-up options.


↠ Open to 6th-8th grade


↠ Regular Season: November 7th to February 25th


↠ Practice Schedule: Mondays and Thursdays until December 8th.

Thursdays only December 15th -February 23rd

Time options: 5:10pm - 6:10pm OR 6:15pm - 7:15pm


↠ Team fee: $50 ( $75 for 2 students any grade)

(Individual student fees waived for 2 volunteer shifts with the Chiefs)


↠ Tournaments are held almost every Saturday - home and away options. Your obligation is

about 1 ½ hours on these days.


↠ Fee for each tournament - $10

Parent Portal (Repeat)

There are 3 programs parents/guardians can use to follow up on their student(s) here at Barry. The first one is the Parent Portal. You can either download the app called Tyler Sis Student 360 (it has a graduation cap on it) or you can access it from a browser using this link. The username will be the email at which you receive communication from the district. You will be able to see your students overall grades and a breakdown of each grade. When you log in from the computer, you can also see your students' classes with the time schedule on it.

LIVE SCHOOL (Repeat)

Another program we will be using at school is Live School. This also has an app or you can access it from a browser using this link. This is how you can track your student's behavior in class and tardies.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM (Repeat)

The last program the 6th Grade Team uses is Google Classroom. Unfortunately, you do not have full access to Google Classroom, but you can ask your student to log in and show you if they have any assignments still needing to be completed. What you can look at would be a tool called "To-Do" on the main page where all your student's classes are shown. If you click missing, this will show any missing work they have not completed.

Clarification on Backpack Items (Repeat)

These are the items that should always be in a student's backpack and/or Chromebook bag:


  • Water Bottle
  • Earbuds (preferably non-wireless/no Bluetooth)
  • Charged Chromebook
  • Something to write with (pencils or pens)
  • Assorted highlighters
  • Colored pencils

Students have been continuing their work on summarizing a text and identifying the main idea/theme. This last week we have read an article about Serena Williams and we summarized the article together as a class. We introduced topic sentences and practiced writing topic sentences together. Next week students will get a chance to continue to practice independently summarizing short stories.


We will be moving into our review for the unit of theme and summary before our break for Thanksgiving.

We have finished up our topic on Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition. We spent last week reviewing concepts and took a nature walk to see these Earth processes around us. I really think this helped students see what we have been talking about.


This week we spent a lot of time talking about annotating. Annotating helps us become an active reader and we practiced annotating our quizzes. We took our retake on Thursday, so grades are updated.


We are moving into our next unit of Rocks and Minerals. We will be having some mini projects, so be on the lookout for a sign up genius if you would like to help donate materials for the classroom!

Cerutti’s 6th grade Math classes have been working on Topic 3 in the book. Topic 3 is all about Numeric and Algebraic Expressions. This includes topics like exponents, greatest common factors, least common multiples, order of operations (PEMDAS), and introducing variables to take the place of numbers.

We have been busy working on our inquiry, “Does Religious Freedom Exist?”. The students have been able to successfully define what religious freedom is. This week we are looking at an excerpt from the Magna Carta and Amendment 1 of the US Constitution to see how these important historical documents protect religious freedom. Students have been diligently working on defining vocabulary words that are found in the inquiry documents.

6th Grade artists have finished their Autumn Patterns project! We will be moving on to discussing color relationships on the color wheel. Students will be using their prior knowledge about the color wheel to learn about tertiary colors

World Language

This week, 6th grade started the Spanish Alphabet. We learned a new song to help memorize the alphabet and have played games to learn the alphabet. I am looking at next week for them to test over it because they have already memorized so much of the Spanish Alphabet in just two days.

Computers

After getting to know each other a bit and reviewing some expectations about professional email use, students just started working in Sketchup, creating 3D drawings of household items. They have made simple tables and chairs as well as more advanced ones so far.
