An interview with Mrs. Alatorre

What is cosmetology?

"Cosmetology is a profession that teaches everything about the beauty industry; it's basically about hair, anatomy, skin, nails, pedicures, and makeup. Everything that you use to makes yourself feel beautiful."

How does someone get into cosmetology?

"Cosmetology has a process you go through, as one thing I look into I try to promote by 8th to 9th graders that way they start putting their credits in place, so when they become juniors as sophomores they will do an application. These applications are turned in to me, then I get a list of students which normally runs from 75 to 100 students. The state only lets me take 25 per class, but its not just a regular core class you do have to go through an interview where your attendance, credits and disciplinary actions are checked; you are then selected for this classed based on the effort you put into becoming apart of this program."

History Of Cosmetology

Since the first time a human being was able to see his or her reflection in a body of water revealing that it was yet another “bad hair day”, there have been cosmetologists. The history of cosmetology is a long one, dating back in ancient times. Since everyone in the ancient world was either a master or servant, the history of cosmetology began as a skilled trade among the servant class, and Egyptian woman had perfected the art of using ochres, and dyes on their cheeks and eyes, as depicted in Egyptian art. Many of the Egyptian women and men wore wigs, and the wig stylist appeared very early in the history of cosmetology. Egyptians had also perfected the art of extracting essential oils from herbs, the same procedure that is used for making essential oils today. The Romans and Greeks prized their baths, which were like today’s spa treatments, and the Greco-Roma bathouse plays an important role in the history of cosmetology. Men as well as women had skin and hair treatments as well as steam baths to open their pores.

Does makeup empower a woman?

Makeup empowers many women. Once they put on makeup, it gives them the confidence they need to do anything they want without feeling insecure about themselves in their own skin. Makeup is like a mask that hides all their insecurities by making them feel beautiful and that all the boys will think they are pretty. Women can't go a day without makeup because they think their natural face isn't good enough. Makeup gives you the self confidence you need to do daring things. Girls wont be afraid to speak up, or to take action. It allows women to make themselves more attractive and makes them look how they want themselves to look like. The media can pressure women badly but it is the woman herself who doesn't feel confident. Women use makeup to impress others around them and feel better about themselves. Many women have low self-esteem without makeup. They cant go a day without it, they feel not themselves. Makeup is like a drug, once you put it on you cant go without it. It makes young girls and women think that they are imperfect and flawed and must use a product to fix themselves up. Girls fall in love with what they see in the mirror once they put makeup on. Not everyone is comfortable with the way they look in their own skin. Makeup is used to cover up and hide the natural beauty of a person's features. Makeup changes who you are and makes you look like someone you are not.

Makeup on Society

Makeup is a tool used not only by women but men too. Makeup is used to enhance, hide, or transform one's appearance. Today, makeup can completely transform a person and give them the confidence and self-esteem they need to succeed. Studies show that makeup actually get women the certain jobs they want because people automatically see a beautiful woman as intelligent and powerful.

Teens today are known to have a low self-esteem because of television ads or magazine photos. Girls today are paying attention to photos that are edited to look unreal, thus creating the desire to have unrealistic expectations of what society says they should strive to look like. Like having a very tiny waist, a thigh gap, a flat stomach, long legs, small nose, big eyes, plump lips, defined jaw-line, perfectly shaped eyebrows, high cheekbones, and finally big breasts and bottom. To be honest every woman and man are beautiful just the way they are and they don't have to change to meet with someone's opinion of beauty.

Not all people agree with makeup, and its not only men but some women too. Some people believe that makeup tricks the other partner into believing that they look as attractive when they have makeup off. They also believe that women and men who wear makeup are animal killers. Unfortunately, makeup products do use animal testing to produce the few cosmetics women and men use on a daily basis. Cosmetics like shampoo and lipstick. Although the men and women who oppose the use of makeup understand that the natural face is better than the unreal one, but for the people who wear makeup every single day believes that enhancing their features make them feel more bold. Whatever decision you make, i'm sure you'll look beautiful/handsome!
