IUPUI Research Academy on Service Learning (May 13-15)

Instructors interested in doing a research project related to service learning have the opportunity to attend the IUPUI Research Academy that aims to advance engaged scholarship. The conference is from May 13-15 in Indianapolis.

One of our faculty members is already slated to attend. I have professional development funding available for up to 2 additional faculty members who wish to attend this conference this year.

Your post-conference obligation will be to teach or co-lead a faculty development workshop during the 2015-16 academic year.

More information is available from the conference website.

If you are interested, please email me and let me know what type of project you would like to pursue. Deadline is March 31.

Golden Key Fellowship for faculty development

The Golden Key Fellowship Program promotes experiential education at Murray State by providing faculty and staff an opportunity to obtain additional training in experiential education and to share new knowledge with the campus community through presentations and the creation or enhancement of an ERA for students.

You can apply for funding for the 2015-16 academic year below:

Deadline to apply is April 15.

Apply for Service Learning course designation

If you have a new or existing course that you would like to be designated as service learning, the deadline to submit for approval is April 15.

This process involves filling out an application form that is reviewed and approved by an advisory board. If approved, faculty can inform the registrar to include the Service Learning designation in subsequent semesters (an S in the course section).

If you are interested in implementing service learning in an existing course or developing a new course, contact university service learning coordinator Elizabeth Price at eprice4@murraystate.edu or (270) 809-3530. Additional resources can be found online at http://libguides.murraystate.edu/servicelearning

If a colleague has expressed interest in teaching a service learning course, please encourage them to come to my workshop in April.

  • Title: What is service learning?

  • Where: Waterfield Library Classroom 210

  • Workshop description: Service learning, in which field-based experience with community partners is integrated into the course curriculum, is a high-impact educational practice (Kuh, 2008). The process for teaching a service learning course at Murray State will be discussed.

  • Attendees are welcome to bring their lunches. I will provide dessert.

Books to add to Waterfield Library

The QEP committee has agreed to fund a one-time purchase of new books or DVDs that discuss experiential learning implementation, best practices or research/scholarship.

If there are new titles on service learning, internships, or study abroad that you would like to see added, please send them to me by March 31. An email with the link would be perfect.
