Tips from our School Nurse Mrs. Alessi - Cold Weather and Chapped Lips

Cold weather can be a brutal time of the year for your lips. The cold air, the chilling wind and dry, heated air inside all contribute to making your lips dry and tight. In addition, when we go out in the cold, the last thing we cover up is the mouth.

Lips are a special type of skin that is thin and delicate and requires tender loving care. The lips dry out 10 x faster than the rest of the skin on your face so it is important to provide extra protection.

Here are some tips to keep your lips smooth and lovely all winter long:

  1. Don’t lick your lips.

  2. Use a non-medicated lip balm.

  3. Avoid brushing or rubbing your lips when they are flaky or peeling.

  4. Treat cracks right away.At night, apply lip balm before you go to bed.
