Machias Staff

March Literacy Month

During the month of March, Machias classes will be celebrating literacy with shared reading experiences. Each week, every class will read aloud and respond to the same book. Our theme is “We are America.“ Our books will explore the diverse voices and shared goals of Americans.

The books we will enjoy together are:

• Feb. 28-March 4: A Big Mooncake for Little Star by Grace Lin

• March 7-11: Fry Bread by Kevin Noble Maillard

• March 14-18: Dreamers by Yuyi Morales

• March 21-25: The Year We Learned to Fly by Jacqueline Woodson

Follow up and engage in book talks at home. Ask your student what they thought of each book.

It’s back—in person— The Scholastic Book Fair!

Finally! In-person Book Fair will be returning to our library March 28-31. Classes will have an opportunity to browse the book fair and write a “wish list” during their library class that week. Parents are invited to shop at the book fair before or after parent-teacher conferences. Select a good book or two with your children to keep them reading.

Volunteers are needed to provide a successful book fair. (See the schedule below.) Please email Mrs. Begley at or call Ms. Charlot at 360-563-4892 to volunteer to cashier. Help is also needed to pack up on Friday, April 1, 8:00-9:30 a.m. after the book fair. Your help is appreciated! See the schedule below.

Welcome Back Volunteers!

We are again utilizing volunteers in schools on a limited basis. At this time only vaccinated individuals will be permitted to volunteer in our schools/campuses.

To volunteer in our schools/campuses, please complete the following online form. This form must be completed every two years. For the safety of our students, volunteer applicants must undergo a Washington State Patrol background check before beginning service. Volunteers will also need to present a valid state vaccination card for COVID-19 to the school administrator and follow the school’s volunteer process. Schools may need to monitor and limit the number of volunteers in a building to meet the state COVID-19 guidelines for social distancing. Parent/guardians are welcome to volunteer from home by assisting teachers remotely.

Volunteers who have completed the background application and showed proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be required to:

  • Sign in at the school main office
  • Present proper state ID
  • Follow all school and district COVID-19 protocols and procedures
  • Stay home if experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms
