Man on the Moon

By Taylor Bromagen

"Thats one small step for man one giant leap for mankind." One famous quote by Neil Armstrong. Although America has had many important accomplishments, putting a man on the moon was one of them. It was Kennedy's goal to make it to the moon by the end of the decade. What makes it great to this 27 year old first grade teacher in Nebraska is that America supported it, accually going there, and making it back safely.

I woke up at 6:30 to the radio playing my favorite song Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. Ready for the week to be over I got dressed in my houndstooth dress and black heels and hopped in my 1969 blue chevelle and headed to Leigh Elementary. I walked in and one of my first graders approched me yelling my name "Ms. Kucera men are going to the moon today." I stood there at acted like I was shocked but it was the talk of the town how could I not know. Everyone was excited and supporting it. At 9:32 everyone was silent as we all watched Apollo 11 clear the tower. In three days they will reach the moon until then we wait.

Three days later on July 20, 1969 they landed on the moon. I stayed up late to watch them land with the other half a billion people watching. It was so important that I missed a new episode of The Brady Bunch. Michael Collins was in the command module "Columbia" and Neil Armstrong was the first off of the Eagle and minutes later Buzz Aldrin joined him. The collected samples took pictures. I sat there gawking at my televison like a fool. I was picturing bouncing around on the moon. When they placed the flag in the moon. I felt a sense of pride to be an American. Finally they splashed into Pacific Ocean by Hawaii on July 24th. Kennedy's goal was met to make it to the moon.
