Thanks for Another Great Year!
It has been a wonderful year for Thurston County 4-Hers! The Career Portfolios are finished and the 4-H Achievement Banquet is done. Be sure to find the time to say “thank you” to the special individuals recognized as valuable contributors to the 4-H program at the banquet. Volunteers are essential to the structure and survival of the 4-H program. The Extension Staff is honored to work with all of the volunteers “To Make the Best Better” in Thurston County!
Now is the time to start planning for the new 4-H year. It is important to remember that the evaluation process is the final step for a 4-Her to examine their knowledge and skills learned for the year, and how to apply it to the future. Just look how each “H” relates to the Career Portfolio.
Head: Goal setting, decision making, planning and organizing
Heart: Relating to others, caring about others
Hands: Giving through community service, being a responsible citizen

Here area few suggestions to get started for the new year:
- Write down some goals that you might want to accomplish this year.
- Download the next pin application with the Diamond Clover Program to review the accomplishments needed to complete the form.
Brainstorm ideas on how to expand your citizenship and leadership activities to strengthen your Career Portfolio, there are grants available for youth to apply to make a difference in their community. If you have received an award and would like to order a plaque, you can contact the extension office. The cost will be $15.

2017 National Western 4-H Catch-A-Calf Applicants Wanted
A limited number of 4-H members have the opportunity to catch a calf each January during the National Western Stock Show held in Denver, Colorado. Successful catchers will receive their calf in May 2017 to begin feeding the calf to market finish. Youth must show and sell their calf at the 2018 National Western Stock Show. The calves used for this contest are bought with money donated by business sponsors.
Top achievers of the Catch-A-Calf Contest are recognized for their record keeping abilities, relationships with sponsors primarily through correspondence, and showmanship skills. Rate-of Gain and carcass value are also important in evaluating top achievers along with the live animal evaluation.
4-H members from Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, and Kansas are eligible to submit applications. However, any 4-H member who has previously caught a calf in the 4-H Catch-A-Calf Contest is not eligible to apply. 4-H members may obtain applications from county UNL-Extension offices.
To apply, applicants must be between the ages of 12 and 18 as of December 31, 2016 and must be enrolled in 4-H at the time of application. Applicants must have parental as well as Extension Educator consent in order to submit an application. Selected 4-H member applicants will be sent details regarding participation before January 2017.
Applications are due to Amy Kelley (Cheyenne County Extension, PO Box 395, Cheyenne Wells, CO 80810) postmarked no later than December 1, 2016. Information about the Catch-A-Calf Contest can be found on the National Western Stock Show website at: http://results.nationalwestern.com/catch-a-calf/. Contact your local Nebraska Extension Office or Rob Eirich at 308-632-1230 for more information and an application regarding the 2017 Catch-A-Calf Contest.
