In The Know
Coronavirus - While the spread of novel coronavirus is troubling, we must remind ourselves that fear, rumors, and stigma do nothing to stop the further spread of the disease. Viruses do not discriminate. Facts and science, proven public health measures and common-sense precautions in our personal lives are the best measures we can take to protect the people we serve. The best source of information is the Oregon Health Authority. Their site also has links to the CDC and other resources.
Earn college credit and volunteer hours at Coyote Outdoor School
This Spring over 900 5th graders in Eugene will be attending Coyote Outdoor School, and high school students have a leadership opportunity to mentor youth during these programs. High school volunteers, aka Coyote Leaders, run essential parts of Coyote Outdoor School by engaging with students during field studies, games, and campfire programs. Coyote Leaders receive daily mentoring from staff while co-leading activities that inspire younger students to translate curiosity to inquiry. The Coyote Leader Program provides high school students skill-building in leadership, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
High school students in grades 9-12 are encouraged to apply. Outdoor School sessions last 3 to 5 days and are held during a regular school week. We have ~140 spots available for high school students with options to volunteer for 3 days, 2 nights or 5 days, 4 nights. High school students must receive written permission from a parent/guardian and all their teachers to participate. With permission from parents and teachers, students are eligible to volunteer for multiple weeks of Outdoor School.
The opportunity to be a Coyote Leader is a transformative experience for high school students—many find new self-assurance motivating them to pursue college degrees in science, education, or natural resources management. They gain hands-on leadership experience that they can include on resumes and applications and can earn 90 or more volunteer hours. Some students will also have an opportunity to earn college credit at no cost to students or families. Volunteering as a Coyote Leader at Outdoor School enhances maturity, builds confidence, and improves social interactions and classroom learning when they return to school.
Coyote Leaders are required to attend a training before volunteering. Our free overnight training program will be held at SKY Camp March 28-29 (a value of $115 per volunteer). Transportation from Eugene to SKY Camp is available for training and programs. Make-up trainings in Eugene are available on a case-by-case basis if volunteers have a valid reason for missing the overnight training.
The 8th annual WISE (Women in Science & Engineering) Symposium - Will be Wednesday, March 18th, from 3:30-7:30 p.m. This is open to ALL high school students. All means all, we hold no biases for gender, sexual orientation, race or creed. This year the Cascades Raptor Center is returning for their popular workshop on raptors. We're hoping that Valentino (who is female despite the "o") a great horned owl will be willing to make a live appearance. Also on tap, computer science workshops, engineering, genetics, social media and data collecting, physical therapy. Our Keynote is Jessa Sequeira an OSU engineering student who has worked with the group Engineers Without Boarders.

Kudos
Thanks to students and staff who wrote cards, put up signs and banners, and brought in snacks and warm drinks for classified staff appreciation this week. We feel uplifted, appreciated, and loved.
Congratulations to Quinn Wright, Mithrandir Eichner, Alex Jentzsch, Miles Ward and Lairen Miller for winning first place in the codeORcreate challenge this weekend. They created an interactive math tutoring website using software and tools they just learned for the first time this weekend. Wow!
