Pictographs
Pictograph #1
1. A pictograph is a graph that organizes and shows information using pictures. The title tells you what the graph is about, and the labels give us specific information. In the graph below, the title tells us this graph shows students’ favorite subjects. The labels tell us the specific subjects and how many votes each subject received. The key lets us know that one pencil on the graph represents one vote.
Which subject has the most votes?
Which subject has the least votes?
Why do we create pictographs and other kinds of graphs? How are they helpful?
Pictograph #2
2. It is important to read the key of each pictograph because sometimes a picture will represent more than just one vote. In the pictograph below, each paw-print represents two votes. The number of votes for dog is four, not two.
How many people voted for cat?
How many people voted for hamster?
Pictograph #3
3. At times you will see pictographs with pictures divided in half to represent a vote. The pictograph below shows each whole apple picture represents 10 apples while half an apple picture represents 5 apples. Remember to read the title, labels, and key of a pictograph.
How many apples were sold in April?
How many apples where sold in March?
What is the difference in sales between January and February?
