Math Empowers Parents, Grades 3-5 is a triannual newsletter for parents of children in third, fourth, and/or fifth grades. This publication will include information on how parents can support and foster the love of math at home.

## Spring is here! Let's Go Outside and Explore Some Math!

Discuss any (or as many) of the questions below. Ask your child to estimate first and then find the actual measurement, weight, or time.

• How long do you think it will take you to run 100 meters?
• How far you think you can jump?
• How far do you think you can throw a ball?
• How long do you think you can stand (or hop) on one foot?
• How many shots will it take you to make a basket? To make 3 baskets in a row?
• How tall do you think our front door is?
• How long do you think it will take you to fill up a watering can with water? (show them a specific size) How many plants do you think you can water with it?

## Math Activities for the Car

Traveling for Spring Break? Need an activity to keep your child engaged? Turn these times of waiting into learning opportunities with these fun math games to play in the car (or plane or train or line). They require no supplies and can be adapted for all ages.

## Creating Fluency and Number Sense

Does the thought of memorizing multiplication and division facts give your child fear and anxiety? This article talks about how to help your child create better number sense and fluency without memorization. Read through to see some helpful tips and activities that you can use at home with your child to continue to build number sense.
