ADMINISTRATION UPDATE
Dear CCS Families,
As we get ready to break for the week of Thanksgiving, we have much to be thankful for! Our CCS school community has been both the recipient and benefactor of great things this week!
- CCS was awarded a $500 grant from the ExxonMobil Education Alliance. Jason Bliss was on campus today to present us with the check. “The use of the $500 Educational Alliance grant is left to the discretion of the school officials. A grant may be used to purchase equipment from a school's "wish list," set up a program or fund a special project” with a focus on math and science. CCS is appreciative of this grant - we have received it in the past and utilized it to supplement the curricular offerings for students at CCS.
- K-4 classrooms gathered items for food baskets for the Charlotte Food Shelf this week and sent them off today!
- Our school received an Audubon Grant to purchase binoculars to support a fourth-grade project in the Spring - building birdhouses near the base of Pease Mountain on our campus and engaging in birdwatching as part of a Science unit.
Equity Work at CCS was enhanced by the generosity of a Schipp’s Grant and the amazing Charlotte resource of the Clemmons Family Farm. Our 7th and 8th-grade students were able to learn and create with four collaborating artists, all touching on social justice- identity, diversity, courage, and helping one another in the face of injustice. They used examples of John Lewis and began with the artists asking the students about other books they have read that address social justice- whether it is March or something else.
- Artist, Julio Desmont led students in a painting activity. He added in stories of his childhood in Haiti.
- Kia'Rae Hannon, a Visual Artist, led a drawing activity: Kia brought in colored pencils, markers, and a long roll of paper- the children created a line-drawing activity.
- Musician, Mike Dyke led students in an engaging and rhythmic storytelling activity. He shared stories of Jamaica and how music was used to combat poverty and achieve education for many young people growing up there.
- Poet, Harmony Edsomwan gave a powerpoint presentation about her own story and engaged students in their own poetry creation.
We wish all of our students, staff, families and community members a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving week. We are grateful for our wonderful extended school community!
Kind Regards,
Stephanie, Jen and Cassandra
