Fulton Science Academy
ACCREDITED AND STEM CERTIFIED COLLEGE PREP GIFTED SCHOOL
Week of November 18, 2019
Principal's Corner
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
Here we are, the last week before Thanksgiving break! It has been a packed few weeks. First I would like to thank everyone who came out to our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner. It was a wonderful turnout and such a fun event. I love getting to spend quality time like that with all of our families. I hope that everyone else had as much fun as I did. Thank you to our MSO and other parent volunteers for all of your hard work you put in on the dinner and set up. It was truly a beautiful event.
FSA's Homecoming Week was last week and it all culminated into the Homecoming Dance! Throughout the week our high school students had spirit week where each day was a fun theme, ending on Friday with a super fun pep rally with our middle and high school students. That night, our Varsity basketball team dominated against Tapestry with the final score being 59 - 53 with Senior Ife B. having a career high scoring 17 of the games points. The middle school boys also won their game that night with Sanjay T. leading the team with 16 of the games points! Both games had a wonderful crowd! Thank you to everyone who came out to support our teams last Friday!
Our swimming team also competed in their first meet in school history over the weekend. The team competed at the TKA/Crown Invite at the Cumming Aquatic Center. They all worked very hard and continue to look forward to the rest of the season.
I hope that everyone enjoys the rest of their week and that everyone has a fun and safe Thanksgiving Holiday with your families and friends.
There is a lot more information in this week's Newsletter, including exciting information about competitions over this past weekend from our History Team, Math Team, and Science Olympiad Team among other important things coming up here at FSA! Make sure you don't miss a thing!

Middle School Science Olympiad Competes at Dodgen/Walton Invitational
This past Saturday, twenty-eight FSA Science Olympiad students competed in the second invitational of the season. The students traveled to Walton High School in Marietta where they faced 48 teams from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Tennessee. “The Dodgen Tournament is notoriously competitive with several nationally-ranked teams,” said head coach Pam Walsh. “Since it is still early in the season, we applied a different strategy when forming our teams and developing our competition schedule. Our goal was to create two balanced teams rather than one strong team and one less-experienced team. This gives our newer students an opportunity to work with and learn from an experienced team member. Of course, this means our team ranking is lower than it could be, with our teams placing 5th and 8th overall.”
“We’ll see many of these same teams on December 7, when we compete at the Chattahoochee Invitational,” said head coach Gloria Stathos. “That tournament should give us a better indication of how we compare to rival teams,” she said.
Students placing in the top six in their events include:
Anatomy & Physiology – coached by Dr. Naragarajan & Mrs. Nori
5th Place – Varsha and Navya
Boomilever – coached by Mrs. Stathos
6th Place – Tejash and Shourya

Shock and AlexWeston Eshaan
On November 16th, Fulton Science Academy’s Middle School History Bowl Team, Eshaan B. (6th grade, Alex R. (7th grade), and Weston B. (8thgrade), qualified to compete at the High School National History Bowl Championships in Washington D.C. in April 2020. Weston B. also qualified for the High School National History Bee Championships in D.C.
FSA’s middle school team faced multiple high school teams including Chattahoochee, Johns Creek, Walton, Woodstock, Cherokee Bluff,Cambridge, Commerce, Brookwood, Lambert, Apalachee, Hermann (S. Carolina), and Newnan’s B & C teams at the East Georgia History Bee & Bowl Competition. FSA’s middle school team beat every Georgia high school team except for last year’s state champs, Chattahoochee High School – only separated by a few points. Adding to this underdog story, FSA’s middle school team was short three teammates that had other academic tournament commitments.
Only the four highest-scoring teams qualify to move on to the late afternoon semi-final rounds. FSA finished in the third-place lead, which advanced them to the semi-finals. FSA faced Chattahoochee in their final match. Ironically, half of Chattahoochee’s team consisted of previous FSA middle school alumni.
FSA’s coach, Jodie Bennion, commented, “I’m shocked at our success, as most of our team had never competed in a history competition before. I can’t wait to watch these students compete at the Middle School National Championships in Chicago this summer against teams their own age. These middle school students demonstrated discipline and stellar teamwork beyond their years. In fact, I gave the winning plaque to Eshaan to hold in the team photo and he immediately passed it to Weston and explained that Weston should be the one holding the award since he earned most of the team’s points. I want to be like these young men when I grow up!”
Strong Work FSA Middle School Academic History Team!

Home Visits; A Great Activity for Your Student, No Matter Their Grade Level!
Here is some feedback from our parents:
- “Early in the school year, a group of teachers took the time to come to our home to meet us and discuss the school program with us. That event brought us back to the time in which schooling was a true partnership between parent and teacher and reaffirmed in our minds that FSA truly cares about the development of our children”
- “We even had two teachers visit us at our home. They were a pleasure to meet and we could clearly see how much they enjoy teaching students.”
- “Thank you very much for your visit and the chocolates yesterday. We enjoyed having you over very much. I also want to thank you for turning math from the most complicated and somewhat scary subject into one of our most favorites.”
- “We all enjoyed your visit last night to our home. It was such a pleasure to informally get to know both of you. My son thought it was really cool that two teachers came to his house. He talked about it the whole way to school this morning in carpool. Personally, I admire the dedication you both have for your jobs. It makes a big difference in a student’s attitude toward school. Your visit left no doubt in my mind that FSA was the right decision for my son.”
- “I just wanted to write on behalf of my husband and I and thank you for visiting our child. He loved having you both come and visit. We appreciate the level of caring and attention that you have consistently shown our family. It is rare to see such a dedication from teachers for their jobs. We can tell that you love teaching and you care for our children. Thank you for visiting our child when he was not feeling well.”
How can I schedule a home visit?
Very simple.
To schedule an elementary school home visit: Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
To schedule a middle or high school school home visit: Simply email sduman@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Mr. Duman will be in touch to confirm final details.
Depending on our teacher’s availability, at least two teachers will be together to visit our students and parents at their homes. The best times to schedule a home visit are weekdays after 5:00 pm, and anytime during the weekends, except Sunday mornings. For any questions you have about this program, send an e-mail to homevisit@fultonscienceacademy.org
