School-Wide Focus Areas
Last month I introduced the 4 school-wide focus areas for this school year. Here's what you can do about the three of them this month.
- Vocabulary - learn the definition and practice the following words in and out of your class: evaluate, essential, debate, random, provide
- Attend student council meeting to give your ideas
- Come to school every day
- Tell your family and friends about what Culver City Adult School can do to help them
Principal's Message
This month we have several days off of school and work. Let's remember to be thankful, for not only the days off, but more importantly, for what they represent. On November 12th we celebrate and thank our veterans who have served or are serving in the armed services and fought for our freedom. Please take time to thank a vet. On November 22nd we celebrate Thanksgiving. It is a time to remember all that we can be grateful for. It is easy to get overwhelmed with difficulties in our lives, but finding things to be thankful for can help use get through those difficult times. I challenge everyone to find at least three people in their lives and thank them. It will make their day and you'll discover that it will make your day, too.

How can ESL students practice English outside the classroom?
We can use technology to help us learn English. At Culver City Adult School, all ESL students use an online tool to practice the skills they are learning in class. These programs can be used on any computer, anywhere. For reading practice, we use southwestabe.org (marshalladulteducation.org). It is available on smartphones and computers anytime, anyplace. We also have a library next door to the adult school! Reading out loud is a great way to improve your English pronunciation and comprehension. Are there any children in your life you can read to? If you have a library card, you can take books home. You can also use the library computers for free. If you want a library card, ask your teacher for information on how to get one, or go next door to the library and ask the librarian:)! There are also many apps on smartphones. Which ones do you recommend? These are also available on smart phones. If you aren't working somewhere where people speak English, volunteer somewhere. If you want to volunteer, talk with your teacher or to Monica, the ESL Coordinator, to come up with a plan. It is necessary to speak English everyday in the community if you want to speak and understand what people are saying to you. How else can you practice your English outside the classroom? Brainstorm with your teacher and classmates. Don't wait! Let's come up with a plan today and get you practicing everyday outside the classroom.
Competition to advance adult ed
The Culver City-based XPRIZE Foundation is encouraging educational institutions to register to compete in the $1 million Communities Competition, a 15-month long national competition that challenges organizations, communities and individuals to recruit adults with low literacy skills to download and use the top learning apps from the Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE. The new competition aims to expand access to adult education technology tools and empower adult learners to acquire the skills they need to advance their education, find better work, or simply play a more active role in their child’s school life.
