News From Mr. Gresham

Dear Roosevelt families,

The other day I was talking with one of our 5th graders who started at Roosevelt in the Head Start program 8 years ago. I have been reflecting on this and what an honor it has been to be a part of her life across those 8 years of her childhood. What an honor it has been to be a part of your child’s life for whatever length of time it has been. Partnering with families and staff to help children, learn, discover, inquire, play, and grow fuels me in this work. While it is bittersweet to leave Roosevelt, I look forward to partnering with the broader scope of Bellingham Schools and community in service of children.

Back to Roosevelt, something you can do to help Mr. Darragh with his start is take him up on his offer to meet with you. It is a benefit to the school and to all students for him to hear your perspective about Roosevelt. Thank you in advance for making time to share with him.

Wishing you all the best, and as we have ended every assembly this year, be kind and have courage.

Tom Gresham

Welcome Mr. Darragh

Hello Roosevelt Families!

I am excited to introduce myself to all of you. My name is Aaron Darragh and I am honored to be selected as the principal of Roosevelt Elementary School next year. Mr. Gresham and I are friends, and he has already been sharing with me how amazing the Roosevelt community is. I am excited to become a member of your community and build positive and supportive relationships as I believe learning about and knowing one another is the most important first step in all that we do.

A little about me outside of school. First, I am a dad and husband with three amazing kids; Makenzie who just turned 18 and will be off to college next year, Maddie who will be a sophomore next year, and Maguire who is going into 8th grade. All three kids have unique strengths, challenges, and aspirations; in this regard, I fully understand that parenting is the hardest job we ever do, and one that has no instructional manual to guide us. My wife, Mischelle, and I are high school sweethearts and both of us are elementary principals. We love going on family adventures, especially camping and spending time together any way possible.

I have been in education for 25 years and have loved every minute of it. For the past four years, I served as principal of Columbia Elementary here in Bellingham. Prior to Columbia, I spent ten years as principal at Bay View K-8 school in Burlington Washington and three years as principal at Pleasant Glade Elementary in Lacy Washington. I mostly taught 4th and 5th grade in Ferndale and Central Kitsap school district, which is where I grew up.

I want you to know that every child is really important to me. I truly believe that “ALL children are loved”; the core belief held by all who work in Bellingham Public Schools. I enjoy building positive relationships with kids, learning who they are and their challenges, hopes, and dreams. I really enjoy partnering with families, children’s first teachers, and school staff to support kids’ growth and development. Working together we contribute to amazing little people who grow up to become amazing big people.

I will be at Roosevelt starting in late July. If you are interested in connecting over the summer, before the school year starts, please feel free to email me and I will get back to you.

Please take care and I hope you all have an amazing summer!

With warm regards,

Aaron Darragh

Opportunity Council is accepting applications for Early Head Start and preschool programs.

Preschool is an early learning educational program available for children ages 3 and 4. Classes run Tuesday-Friday and include 2 home visits and 2 parent/teacher conferences per year. The home visits and conferences are a great time to discuss and learn about child development, focusing on parents as children’s primary teachers, and to establish children and family goals. This program is available at no cost to eligible families, centers are located in various locations in Bellingham. We also have centers located throughout Whatcom County.

Early Head Start is a home based program for prenatal up to the age of 3. This program consists of weekly home visits that focus on parents as children’s primary teachers, assisting you in meeting your child’s developmental milestones, establish family goals, and also provides 2 classroom experiences per month. This is not a center-based program.

You can apply online at or call 360-734-8396, to have an application mailed to you.

Reminder: Register now for Fall 2021

Reminder: Register now for fall 2021

Registration for fall 2021 is still open for kindergarten and all grades. Families can register students via this webpage. Registering now helps us hire staff, balance our classes, connect with families and ready our schools to welcome our students.

Registration is for students new to our district or who want to return after transferring to a school or program outside our district. You do not need to register current students; we automatically re-enroll them.

A special note about kindergarten: All children who will be 5 before Sept. 1, 2021 can be registered for kindergarten. We plan to start in-person learning at every school this fall with strong safety protocols in place.

To find out more about attendance areas, registration and childhood immunization schedules, please visit or contact our elementary schools directly. Feel free to let a friend or neighbor with a future kindergartner know the registration window is open and ready for them!
