Thank you for a wonderful start!
What a great start to the school year! Our students, teachers, and you as parents have all been absolutely wonderful in our transition into the 2018-2019 school year. As I mentioned at our three Back to School Nights last week, education takes an “all hands on deck” approach for our students to be successful. The most important thing that you can do at home is set aside time to read and talk with your child every day about what they learned at school. Children thrive on routines and while they may be tough to implement at first, stick with it as the benefits will come. Feel free to ask your child’s teacher about other things you can do to help your child at home.
Thank you for all you do as parents. We appreciate your support and welcome you to contact us at any time with suggestions or concerns, but please remember that students and adults alike strive on positivity (#positivelypwcs). Please feel free to reach out to either one of us via email (baldwisl@pwcs.edu and gazdale@pwcs.edu) or phone (703-468-4800) to schedule a time to sit and brainstorm with us so we can help make Haymarket ES an even better place than it already is. As you have hopefully seen, our mantra/tagline is #haymarkettogether because it takes us all working hard as a team to ensure that ALL students are successful ALL the time!
With Appreciation,
Mr. Baldwin and Mrs. Gazda

Guidance at a Glance
The start of the school year has been a fantastic one for the guidance department! Kindergarten started the year with a focus on building friendship skills. First and Second grades emphasized teamwork, and 3-5 had a strong focus on Choices and Consequences. In the coming month, all grade levels will be focusing on Problem-Solving using Haymarket’s People Problem-Solving Star. Make sure to ask your child about it!
Your Professional School Counselors encourage you to reach out with any questions or concerns so we can problem-solve together to set your child(ren) up for success!

3-5: Robin Hudspeth Schenck, hudspern@pwcs.edu
We are excited to team with you to help your child succeed!

Fall Book Fair News
We are happy to announce that our Fall Book Fair will be from November 26th-30th with Family Night on Tuesday, November 27th. The theme will be Enchanted Forest: Let Your Imagination Grow. Students and staff are invited to dress up as a Fairy Tale Character during the school day on November 27th. As we know costumes will be going on sale soon. We wanted to let you know in advance if you would like to dress up. It is optional. Please do not bring toy weapons to school as part of your costume.
If you would like to volunteer at the Book Fair please contact Ryane Zenoniani at zenonire@pwcs.edu. Thank you!
Boosterthon Fun Run Coming in November!
Our awesome PTO will once again be partnering with Boosterthon to host our largest fundraiser of the school year. Similar to last year, it will be a 9-day program with a kick off Pep Rally on November 14th. Families will have time to get pledges for every lap your student runs, and then we’ll celebrate at the Fun Run on November 29th. The PTO asked the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Fun Run and make it more profitable, easier, and fun. Students will also experience an amazing theme, MindSpark Mystery Lab! Please help our school by reaching out to sponsors. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer on your student at the Fun Run! Thank you for your support!
Calling all businesses- the Haymarket Elementary Drama Dept. needs YOU!
We are looking for sponsors for our musical, Elf, Jr.! We are requesting monetary donations to help cover the cost of the set, props and costumes. We will recognize the businesses who donate by including your company logo and contact information in the performance programs. This would be a great way for your business to reach hundreds of people in the community. We are trying to collect all donations by the end of October. Please contact Mrs. CW at collinav@pwcs.edu if you think your business or company would like to help bring this magical story to life on our school stage!

School Food and Nutrition Services Celebrates National School Lunch Week
National School Lunch Week (NSLW) is October 15-19, 2018. This week gives School Food and Nutrition Services an opportunity to showcase the quality of our nutritious meals.
This year’s NSLW theme is “Lots 2 Love,” and we are celebrating with a photo contest! Tell us what you love about school lunch by posting a picture of your lunch tray with your favorite items on Twitter or Instagram for a chance to win a prize!
Here are the rules:
1. Tag @PWCSNutrition (Twitter) or @PWCSNutrition_ (Instagram) in your post.
2. Use the hashtags #PWCSLunch and #NSLW18.
3. Contest begins October 15th. Entries must be received by 5:00 pm on October 19th.
4. No twitter or instagram? No problem! You can still enter the contest by emailing your photo to RONKSG@pwcs.edu by 5:00 pm on October 19th.
5. Photos will be judged on the following criteria: adherence to theme, clarity of picture, overall impression. A photo will only be considered once, so multiple posts of the same photo will not increase chances of winning.
Up to 4 student winners will be chosen from each school level (elementary, middle and high). Winners will be announced via Twitter and Instagram on Monday, October 22nd. Elementary winners will receive a Kindle Fire, middle school winners will receive a pair of Beats headphones, and high school winners will receive an iPad.
What else is happening during National School Lunch Week, you ask? Locally grown foods will be served, and we encourage parents or other family members to come join us for lunch. Stop by the cafeteria and see for yourself what delicious, healthy choices are available to students every day!
Virginia Farm to School Week
PWCS School Food and Nutrition Services celebrates Virginia Farm to School Week, October 1-5, 2018! Did you know your school cafeteria serves seasonal Virginia produce all year long? This week we will be serving apples from Crown Orchard in Batesville, Virginia, and Bibb lettuce from Portwood Gardens in Dayton, Virginia.
Incorporating local products into our menus gives students the opportunity to enjoy nutritious, fresh fruits and vegetables, while learning about the seasonality of foods and how foods are grown. These products support local farms and are a tasty way to improve the health of our children!
To celebrate Virginia Farm to School Week at elementary schools, School Food and Nutrition Services is participating in the “Crunch Heard ‘Round the Commonwealth!” on Friday, October 5th at 10:00 am students at Haymarket ES, in partnership with PWCS Food Services will participate in this exciting event.
