Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians
WHITFORD WELLNESS WEEK
This week staff and students have been focusing on wellness – how we look after ourselves and others – by taking part in a range of wellbeing activities:
Mindful Monday
- A series of mindfulness activities to help calm the body and focus the mind for the week.
Try-It Tuesday
- Trying out new experiences has many great benefits including learning new things, taking safe-risks, possible failure and personal growth.
Wacky Wednesday
- Being able to deal with life’s curveballs is a great skill to have. There may be a few surprises at school today!
Thankful Thursday
- Being grateful has many positive impacts such as improved relationships, better mental and physical health, increased empathy and even better sleep.
Flake-Out Friday
- Taking time out to rest and recharge is necessary for health. We’re aiming for a quieter, slower day today.
Homework has been cancelled for the week and children are encouraged to use the extra time enjoying the outdoors, playing games, spending time with family and trying to use electronic devices as little as possible.
We hope the healthy habits practiced this week will inspire all of our Whitford families to take time for their own overall wellness, leading to better physical, emotional, and mental health
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
A huge congratulations to all students involved in the Athletics Carnival last week. They did an amazing job and most importantly, displayed a fabulous team spirit, tried their best and were supportive of each other. We were blessed with beautiful weather as well, reminding us that not only is Spring in the air, but Summer just around the corner! Well done to Mr Adriano D’Adamo for preparing the students so well and for all the organisation and training that took place in the lead up. We now look forward to the Interschool Competition next week. Go WCPS!
TOURNAMENT OF MINDS
Congratulations also to our Tournament of Minds Team (The Wonderous Whitfordites) who were awarded a Distinction for their solution to an ARTS State-wide Super Challenge. In a year like no other, this year’s competition was all done online.
WASTE AUDIT
The Waste Audit Results for 2020 have been received and the results have been really impressive. Thank you to all of our parents and students for their help in reducing our waste. To view the audit report, please see further in this newsletter.
Areas that we still need to work on are:
- Continue use of worm farm for food scraps or compost bin;
- Recycling of drink containers; and
- Improvements in the Canteen, eg, students bring their own containers for lunch orders to be placed in (this was actually a suggestion from our student helpers).
WAFLW GRAND FINAL
We’re pretty proud of Miss Tarni Golisano, one of our Year 3 teachers, who is playing in the WAFLW Grand Final at Arena Joondalup this Saturday 19 September at 2.40pm. If you’d like to watch the game, but can’t get down there, it will also be broadcast on Channel 7 at the same time.
Good luck Tarni. You’re possibly feeling slightly nervous, but no doubt super excited.
Many blessings
Tamara McGougan

Thank you to Max from Year 4 for his beautiful artwork, reminding us to be mindful. Great shared project completed at home with the help of his mum! Well done.

Tournament of the Minds
Congratulations to our 2020 Tournament of Minds team! We are proud and excited to announce that they were awarded Distinction for their solution to a State wide Super Challenge. Our team this year, consisted of Year 6 students, Caitlin Yek, Hayley Cavanagh, Jacob Smith and Luca Traynor, as well as Year 5 students, Abby Hermann, Ella Forsyth and Liam Corbett. They chose the Arts as their focus for presentation. Many schools from around the State entered teams.
This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the format was very different to the usual requirements. Students prepared solutions to a Super Challenge and then created a video that was judged by the TOM Committee, last Saturday and Sunday.
Well done Team!
