A Message From the Principal
Dear Parents,
Parshat Pekudei ends with “ For the cloud of Hashem was upon the Mishkan by day, and there was fire within it at night, before the eyes of the entire house of Israel in all their journeys” (40:38). Rashi comments “On every journey that they were traveling, the cloud would rest in that place where they encamped.”
The Torah paints for us an extremely powerful image. We can imagine the type of impact it would have on our Avodas Hashem to literally have a physical manifestation of Hashem’s presence visible to us on the journey of our life, just as B’nei Yisrael had on their journey through the midbar.
How can we build our children’s and our own relationship with Hashem without such concrete manifestations of Hashem’s presence?
Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak of Lublin, an 18th century chasidic rabbi better known as the Seer of Lublin, was asked by his student to show him one general way to serve Hashem. He replied to his student, “It is impossible to tell people what way they should take. For one way to serve G-d is through learning, another through prayer, another through fasting, and still another through eating. Everyone should carefully observe what way his heart draws him to and then choose his way with all his strength.”
We need to think deeply about what might appeal to our children’s and our hearts and then actively seek out and pursue those opportunities to build our relationship with Hashem.
One way we can build our children’s relationship with Hashem is through shared religious experiences. Participating in Kabbalat Shabbat at Shabbat Shel Ruach or coming back for the inspirational singing during Seudah Shlishit with your child would be a wonderful shared religious experience, especially for children who like singing (your children LOVE singing). Another shared experience could be the women’s megillah reading on Purim morning at KYHS. This is a great opportunity for mothers and daughters to participate in a female-focused tefillah, because it is Purim and it has the Haman/grogger element it is very child appropriate.
As adults, our neshamot need spiritual nourishment as well so that we can be strong models for our children. Taking time to hear Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, a true leader in our time, during his forthcoming visit to our community could be a spiritually uplifting experience for us.
These are just a few of the many diverse spiritual experiences our community is offering us in the near future. It behooves all of us to take advantage of each of these wonderful opportunities. We may not have the annanei hakovod to accompany us on our journeys, but we can still have a strong relationship with Hashem that can be strengthened through these powerful spiritual opportunities.
Shabbat Shalom,
Mrs. Becky Troodler
