"Reading and writing cannot be separated. Reading is breathing in; writing is breathing out." ~Pam Allyn
In our last issue, the conversation centered around talking as the foundation of literacy. If talking is where literacy starts, where do we go next?
My soap box stance continues to be, regardless of content, that we are all language teachers. Reading should be coupled with writing. While we continue to separate the two or ignore in classrooms beyond ELAR, students are "holding their breath" and "turning blue."
Thought for EVERY teacher: The next time you assign reading, think; how could students respond through writing?
What we think, we can say.
What we can say, we can write.
What we can write, we can read.
Below are resources to support reading, writing, and speaking in EVERY Classroom.
