Principal's Message
Dear SMG Families and Friends,
I pray you all had a beautiful and blessed Holy Week and Easter. Today is the Second Sunday of Easter, also known as Divine Mercy Sunday, encouraging us to continue to focus on the Easter message of redemption as Jesus offers us total forgiveness of all sins and punishment to anyone-no matter how serious the sin-who goes to Confession and receives Holy Communion on this day. Pope John Paul II had a great devotion to St. Faustina, whose visions and revelations are often associated with Divine Mercy.
By definition, the word mercy comes from the Latin misericordia, which literally means "miserable heart". In reflecting on this literal meaning, it is important I think, to realize that Divine Mercy Sunday isn't only about God forgiving our sins, it is about us forgiving and recognizing the pain and suffering of others as well. As Fr. George Kosicki, CSB, once stated that being merciful means, "having a pain in your heart for the pains of others, and taking pains to do something about their pain" (Stackpole, R. 2010). As a Catholic school, we try everyday at SMG to reveal to students God' s merciful love and instill in our students the virtue of mercy. Simple acts of mercy, such as apologizing to a classmate and being forgiven, and helping someone through suffering by participating in activities such as food drives and the Pounder Project (see below), are all simple ways we are encouraging students to be merciful to others. God is relieving us of a heart of misery everytime we go to Confession and at Mass when we say, "Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy." Our God is a God of mercy, and He is empowering us to go and be mericiful to others and to teach our children to be merciful as well.
St. Maria Goretti, Pray for Us!
Blessings,
Laura Behee, M.Ed.

Stephen Breen Memorial Foundation BBQ Cook-Off Champions!
Jaden Barraza and his dad participated in the Stephen Breen Memorial Foundation BBQ Cook-Off that was held today at Nolan Catholic High School. Jaden and his dad camped out at Nolan Saturday night, tending to their smoker and the delicious ribs, brisket, and chicken they were preparing, even braving a storm with strong winds that moved through during the night! In the end, their hard work and care paid off as they took home the Championship title! Congratulations and many thanks to Jaden and Mr. Barraza!

- During a "Meet the Pioneers" tour of the Log Cabin Village students traveled from cabin to cabin visiting historical interpreters dressed in period attire. The interpreters discussed 19th century Texas frontier history, demonstrated various crafts from the time period, and engaged visitors in a conversation about the past. Reproduction items such as weaving, candle-dipping, blacksmithing, and milling were available at each tour stop.
