Pinstack Trip Rules/Info/Bus Lists

Every student who is attending the trip to Pinstack will receive a trip packet on Monday and are expected to read the itinerary and follow all stated rules while we are on the trip.

Students have been assigned to a bus list and a chaperone group. On the bus, students can sit with whoever they want. During check-ins, students will meet with the same chaperone each time. While we are at Pinstack, chaperones will be supervising all areas and making sure students are following all rules and representing themselves and our program in a positive manner. Pinstack is not a huge facility, so we will not be requiring students to be in groups of a certain size or with a chaperone the entire time.

Thursday, May 26th, 4:15-5:30pm

4405 Hudson Drive

Sachse, TX

ALL Beginner Band students will stay after school to rehearse together in preparation for our spring concert. This rehearsal is REQUIRED and will be GRADED for ALL Beginner Band students.

22-23 HMS Band Audition Results

Results from the auditions for the 2022-2023 HMS Bands will be posted after school on Friday, May 27. We will also post them in Canvas and include them in that weekend's Smore.

We will not discuss audition results with anyone until after our spring concert on May 31. Please take a few days after results are posted to reflect before asking us to discuss them. Thanks in advance for adhering to this request!

A word about audition placements:

There is a place for every student in the HMS band. We take a long time listening to all parts of every audition, weighing extra factors, and trying to decide where each student will be adequately challenged but successful. Undoubtedly, some students will be thrilled with their placement, some will be upset, and many will turn out exactly like they thought they would. There is competition in band and there are only so many spots available for each instrument in each band. Part of our job as band directors is to make each band sound balanced and blended and the only way to do that is to have proper instrumentation in each band. Every band will do the same things, just on a slightly different timeline and with different levels of music.

HMS Bands Spring Concert - TIME CHANGE!!!!!

Tuesday, May 31st, 6:30pm

3901 Miles Road

Sachse, TX

ALL HMS Band students will perform their final concert of the year on Tuesday, May 31. This performance is required by all students. More details will come soon, but be prepared for the concert to last 1.5 hours due to the award presentations and ALL bands performing. 2 test grades are given for this performance.

The Wind Symphony and Honors Band students will wear their contest uniform. The Beginner Band and Symphonic Band will need to dress up for this performance (think wedding guest attire) - boys need a collared shirt with a tie and slacks (no jeans), girls need a dressy blouse and dress pants, skirt and blouse, or a dress (the dress or skirt MUST COVER THE KNEES WHILE SEATED OR LEGGINGS MUST BE WORN UNDERNEATH). There is no color requirement for Symphonic Band and Beginner Band dress.

All students will need to arrive at Sachse HS at 5:30pm to warm-up and get ready for the performances. Doors to the auditorium will open for parents to sit beginning at 6:15pm.

SHS Cluster Percussion Ensemble and Sachse Jazz Band Concert

Wednesday, June 1st, 7pm

3901 Miles Road

Sachse, TX

All percussion students will be involved in the concert at Sachse HS. They will all be performing in percussion ensembles and are required to attend this concert.

Percussion students will walk over to Sachse HS with Mrs. Manaois and Mr. Tucker before school ends on this day. They will be excused from 7/8 period and field tripped out of class. They will need to wear all black head-to-toe. The black attire is EXTREMELY important due to the lighting of their performance piece.

Oodles of Noodles Ensemble Concert and Dinner Fundraiser

Monday, June 6th, 6pm

4405 Hudson Drive

Sachse, TX

Most of our band students will perform in an ensemble concert (small groups) on June 6. This will be a fundraiser as well. We will sell lasagna (meat or veggie), salad, bread, a cookie, and water for $10 per person. You can find the order form here. Payment must be sent with the order form (cash or check - made out to Hudson Band Boosters) and all orders and payments are due by May 25.

What Should We Be Practicing?

Practicing should happen daily to help build coordination and muscle memory and retain progress. Students should practice sitting in a real chair (preferably one that doesn't roll/spin), using a music stand, with a metronome. Please make sure woodwind players are properly swabbing out their instrument at the end of every practice session to keep their instruments clean!

Beginner Band:

Rhythm Rockers units 1-8, Musical Mastery warm-up exercises, pages 13-18 in Sound Innovations, Double Reeds units 10-12 in Boot Camp book, SCALES!!! We have started Scale Masters and will award a trophy to the first student in each class who passes off all of their scales. Continue to practice Terracotta and Danza Africana.

Symphonic Band: Longtones 1A, Concert Bb, F Ab, Eb, Db scales, rhythm chart 1-8, concert music

Honors Band: Longtones 1A, Set 1 Opt.1, Set 1 Opt. 4, Concert Bb, Eb, F, and Ab scales, rhythm charts 7-10, spring concert music, ensembles

Wind Symphony: Long tones, lip slurs, scales (ALL - including chromatic), all rhythm charts, spring concert music, technical exercises in Bb, Eb, Ab, and F, ensembles

Spring 50 Day Practice Challenge

We started another 50 day practice challenge after spring break. The challenge runs from March 21-May 22 and will end with a movie reward for students who complete 50 days of practice (at least 20 minutes) over the course of those days. The physical paper will be due no later than May 25 and must include a parent signature in order for a student to earn the movie reward. We do not know which movie we will be watching yet, but will let you know once we have made that decision.

Band Fee Payments

Please take a moment this week to login to your student's Charms account. Make sure to login as a Parent/Student/Member. You will need to use hudsonsoundmachine as the school code. Student passwords should be either just the 6-digit ID number (for first time logins), sID# (that students are used to), capitalized first and last initials plus ID# (HB123456), or something different you or your student has chosen. If you need help resetting a password, please let me know. When you ask for a password to be reset, I will change it to CAPITALIZED first and last initial followed by student ID# (ex. HB123456).

After logging in, you can see payments due in the financial tab, make changes to personal information, see uniform parts that have been checked out, school-owned instrument information, and more.

Spring Band fees are now past due. Please make every effort to take care of this payment ASAP. If you have a financial hardship, please communicate that with us so we can help!

Instrument Usage Fees in Skyward

If your student plays a school-owned instrument (oboe, bassoon, tenor/bari sax, French horn, euphonium, tuba, percussion, and select others), their district school-owned instrument usage fee is reflected in their Skyward account now.

We have had to send many instruments to the repair shop this year and this fee helps pay for those repairs and regular maintenance. Please help make sure we can continue repairing instruments as needed by submitting this district fee. These directions to submit an online payment in Skyward should help you with completing that payment. Please let Mrs. Becker know if you have questions.
