Description
As part of collaboration between the Science and ELLMA office, this institute will focus on NGSS’ 3 dimensions - core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and the science & engineering practices - to build explanations of phenomena. FOSS physical science will provide the context. Participants will engage in the 3 High-Impact Practices for Developing Academic Language and Literacy identified by Jeff Zwiers as a means of expanding students’ science content, language, and literacy skills. Teachers will have the opportunity to apply these concepts to the development of content-based inquiry units that utilize norms and protocols, provide equitable access to all students, and create a social emotional context that builds science understanding.
The Institute will include whole-group sessions, differentiated break-out sessions, and planning time focused on helping educators accelerate and deepen students' learning of academic language, literacy, and content in the bilingual, dual immersion, and English Learner contexts.
