DigiKnow: iPad Care
To ensure the longevity of our district-issued iPads, it's essential that students follow proper care guidelines. Here are some key points to remember:
Please keep your iPad’s iOS updated ( Settings > General > Software Update) and watch your storage to make sure you always have a few GB of free space ( Settings > General > iPad Storage).
Always transport your iPad carefully, latch the case when walking, and avoid placing heavy or sharp objects in the same backpack.
Protect your iPad from extreme temperatures and remember to charge it every night.
Charging in a common, family room promotes healthy media balance.
Intentional damage to an iPad or iPad case is considered vandalism and will result in fines and possibly disciplinary action.
For more information visit HSSD Technology or Common Sense Media. Please contact Kelly Koller, Technology Integration Specialist, for questions at kellkoll@hssdschools.org

HOLIDAY SEASON READING!
As the holiday season approaches and the year winds down, many students eagerly anticipate the well-deserved break from school. While the holidays are often associated with festive decorations, delicious treats, and quality time with family and friends, it's also an ideal time to indulge in the pleasure of reading. Reading over the holiday break is vital. There are a variety of books that focus on captivating middle schoolers and can transport readers to magical worlds and offer a delightful escape.
Cultivating a Lifelong Love for Reading:
The holiday break provides an excellent opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the world of books without the pressure of academic obligations. Reading for pleasure not only enhances vocabulary and comprehension skills but also fosters a lifelong love for learning. Encouraging middle schoolers to explore diverse genres and discover new authors during the break can set the foundation for a rich reading habit that extends far beyond the holiday season.
Expanding Imagination and Creativity:
Books have the power to transport readers to far-off lands, magical realms, and extraordinary adventures. Middle school holiday books, in particular, often feature enchanting tales that captivate the imagination. These stories can inspire creativity and help students develop a broader perspective of the world around them. Whether it's a journey through a winter wonderland or an encounter with mythical creatures, these books offer an imaginative escape that fuels creativity.
Strengthening Language Skills:
Reading during the holiday break is not just a pleasurable pastime; it also contributes to the development of essential language skills. Middle schoolers can enhance their vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking abilities by engaging with well-crafted stories. The diverse language and writing styles found in holiday books for this age group provide an enriching experience that supports academic growth.
Building Empathy and Understanding:
Many middle school holiday books touch upon universal themes of kindness, friendship, and understanding. These stories often feature characters navigating the challenges of the holiday season, fostering empathy among readers. By immersing themselves in these narratives, students can gain a deeper understanding of different perspectives and cultures, promoting compassion and empathy.
As students embark on their holiday break, let's encourage them to embrace the joy of reading. Middle school holiday books not only provide a delightful escape into enchanting worlds but also contribute to the development of crucial academic and emotional skills. Whether it's curled up by the fireplace with a classic tale or embarking on a magical adventure through a contemporary novel, the holiday break offers the perfect opportunity for young readers to discover the transformative power of books.

STUDENT PICK-UP PROTOCOL
If you are picking a student up during the school day, you must come into the main office and sign the student out with your Driver's License. If someone other than you or your emergency contacts is picking up your student, please contact the office to let them know who is picking your student up. Students are not allowed to leave during school hours via bike or walking without prior approval from the main office and Principal.
HEALTH ROOM PROTOCOL
If your student is not feeling well, they need to follow protocol and come to the health room to report their illness prior to contacting home. Students should not be using their iPad to email a parent or texting a parent to pick them up. This will eliminate the spread of illnesses to other students and will make the office aware of students being picked up prior to parent arrival.
SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND DELAYS DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER
In addition to District Social Media, local TV/Radio stations and the District Website, HSSD will also send weather-related delays and cancellations via text message.
